Find Vicki and Liz
We left Guatemala and headed towards Honduras, not enough time to fit in Belize which was a shame but hey, they can keep for another trip!!
Our journey to Honduras started with a short boat ride with all the locals on their way to work followed by a bus journey to the border. Immigration consisted of a man in a shed surrounded by loads of dodgy currency exchangers. Armed with our new passport stamps (why else would we be travelling!) and Limps (Honduran currency) we jumped on a chicken bus - so called because they stop to pick up anything, anywhere - including chickens!
2 more sweltering bus journeys later, we arrived in La Ceiba in the early evening and booked into the Banana Republic Hostel.
Next morning we caught the ferry to Roatan. A recent storm meant the crossing was pretty rough. They handed out sick bags to everybody. Whilst we were both green by the time we arrived, we didn't have to use ours luckily.
On arrival, we headed straight for the West End, where we booked into a lovely (and quite expensive) studio flat. We justified the expense by intending to go self catering. We kind of managed it!
After a couple of days lounging around on the beach and getting eaten by sand flies (they especially liked the taste of Liz) we met Di, a fellow Brit and diving instructor on a night out, and after a drink or several we took the plunge and agreed to start an open water PADI course at Las Rocas in West Bay.
The course was supposed to take 3 days. We ended up taking six and almost giving Di a nervous breakdown in the process! We like to think that we were being thorough and getting out money's worth! The course consisted of yet more studying and an exam, which was more nerve wracking than taking your mask off at 10 metres below and swimming around!
We met some great people at Las Rocas and had a great time. As well as poor Di we befriended Divemaster Jon, Captain Reno and fellow students Glenda and Michelle.
After 10 fun filled days in Roatan, we said goodbye and headed back for the mainland. Jungle Lodge beckoned, aptly named as it is a lodge in the Jungle. We spent our first day there recovering from our Roatan hangover in the most unique swimming pool we've ever seen. The next morning we went for a hike in the jungle and swung through the canopy harness and labyrith of cables (check out the rather flattering photos with the hard hats).
We got aquainted with the biggest biting ants, hairiest spiders and loudest toads we'd come across. We also discovered that our neighbours included tatantulas, snakes and scorpians.. we decided that one night a the lodge was quite enough (we're wusses) .
The next day we headed to San Pedro Sula (AIDs capital of Central America) to start the next leg of our adventure... Next stop South America.
