The adventures of Feather
G'day possums, well I have finally dragged myself away from the searing temparatures and oh so exhausting beach life of Southern Thailand to Australia. Aahh my tan, was so good, argghh watching it disappear as I enter the Ozzie winter not so good. Yes they do have Winter and yes it actually quite cold, and wet and windy! And if one more Ozzie says to me-ahh you should be used to it being a pom, i'll scream!! Anyway my arrival here was somewhat traumatic, the anticipation and excitement of returning to my "home town" of years gone by quickly deflated as I stood by the luggage carousel, for an eternity, until I accepted the fact that my bag wasn't going to show. Perhaps it had decided to stay on the beach with the stray dogs and the romantic tables on the sand. Maybe it had met a more interesting travel companion and decided to stay on, with my dirty undies and sandy flip flops in tow. Yes, it was infact in Singapore! Helpful. As I wasn't! So my first 3 days in Sydney were spent phoning the airline and generally crying and screaming until it reappeared slightly battered and forlorn and with a compensatory 100 dollars to boot- gee thanks! I don't think it even had a very nice time, it looked very unimpressed at arriving into Bondi in the pouring rain. Anyway the guilty dollars have come in useful to buy a big fleecey jumper as it is considerably colder here and i have been taken by surprise. Thus wrapped up in newly purchased winter woolies, spotty scarf from dollar shop!! and bobble hat i have mostly been stocking up on capuccino's..mmm and long walks along the coastline from Bondi. It is still so beautiful here and when I first turned the corner onto the beach i got a little lump in my throat and a tear in my eye! Such a big part of my life this place, so has been a huge trip down memory lane returning. Have been on ferries in the harbour, eaten barramundi and chips on the beach, climbed the harbour bridge in comedy boiler suit and got horrendously windswept- my barnet is now afro circa 1967, and went to see Romeo and Juliet in the Opera House which was wonderful- the excitement only improved when i spotted Madge from Neighbours 2 rows behind! I hovered smiling with my red wine at the interval but was too scaredy to actually approach her! Today there is a surf competition on the beach so myself and a couple of folk from the hostel are going to head down to admire the talent, the surfing talent you understand!! I have a couple more days here and am moving to the suburbs to stay with some old friends for nice home cooked meals, my own room, a shower that hasn't got 6 years of other people's hair down the plughole and ahh yes, wonderful flushing toilets! Then it is off to New Zealand where i will no doubt need to purchase even more warm attire, top temparatures there climaxing at 9 degrees i hear! So for once i think i am jealous of you lot and your british summer, think of me freezing my bits off on top of a glacier somewhere. Til then, Lucy x
