The adventures of Feather
So this is my last message from the land of smiles.. well some smiles and also some seriously grumpy faces if you don't buy their elephant sarongs, henna tattoos or banana, coconut, pineapples on the beach. Have spent the last 10 days or so beaching it in the southern islands, myself and lovely friend Emma have been to Koh Samui and Koh phangang in attempt to make our skin go brown and swim with the fishies. Alas our first few days we were faced with storm clouds and torrential rain and as much as we stared at the heavens hopefully it wouldnt shift. However there were still massages to be had , lovely cheap food to devour and fancy cocktails to drink so we managed! And then the sun came out! as did the hideous tourist town of Koh Samui, full of ladyboy bars and packs of foreigners.. so we left quick smart and jumped on a boat to Koh phangang.. renound for yoga, organic food, chilled out vibes, hippies, full moon beach parties etc etc.. anyway it was much nicer altho a little ridiculous with the dropped out of society hippy types and the dayglo tattoos, but we soaked up some sun, danced on the beach and found some nice bungalows on the beach to stay in.. i ll omit to mention the revolting bungalows we came across too.. oooh dear, lets just say toilets that dont flush, showers that go into the toilet, enormous beasties, etc etc.
Since Emma's departure I have taken myself off to another island called Koh Samet about 3 hours from Bangkok. After coping with a hairy bus ride and even hairier boat journey- pitch black with waves crashing in either side, i have now found my island paradise. This place is stunning, there are bay after bay of clear blue water and sparkling white sand, so clean it squeaks underfoot. There are little bungalows dotted up the hillside with jungle backdrops and every night i eat my dinner on low tables on the sand and watch the waves roll in - all for about 2 pounds! It is such a shame i am on my own as this is such a romantic location.. altho i have met a few cute stray dogs who like to dine with me of an evening so i am not totally alone! The only downside to living in a beach bungalow in a jungle is the size of the mosquitos! they are big and they are persistant and boy, are they hungry!! But i guess every paradise has its downsides! So have a couple more days of lying on the beach and watching my skin turn browner, to read a few more books and then i am off the Sydney, to believe it or not Winter conditions.. a week there and NZ for some serious snow activity! I'll be a packing my bobble hat and putting the bikinin away for a while. Thailand has been fantastic all in all a real mix of culture and beach, jungle and mad sticky citylife. I wont miss the squat toilets and the carrying loo roll everywhere, the elephant sized mossies and the constant fight to get anywhere in a tuk tuk without going to his friends tailors or jewellrey shop. but i will miss the warmth of the climate and the people i have met, the cheapness and easiness of living here and real eye opener into a completley different culture and country i have been lucky enough to experience. Next stop Oz, for a nice comfy toilet and some Tim Tams! X
