We spent last week exploring the South of Belize. We travelled down to Placencia for the weekend to meet up with some friends we have met out here and people from University. We had a really nice weekend down there - they have the best beaches in Belize, we also got to hear some Garifuna drumming. Will and I then travelled North to Sittee River. This was a very remote village, we had to hitchhike to get there because the bus didn't go down the road. We We kayaked along the Sittee River for about 3 1/2 hours - it was beautiful and there were no other tourists staying there. Next we went to a village called Hopkins which is basically built around one 3 mile street. It is on the coast, and we stayed in a hostel on the beach (it didn't have running water though, so bucket showers for a few days). We had a Garifuna drumming lesson at the local drumming school. It was really hard, but he taught us a few rhythms. I have been looking for a drum, but they are all too expensive or too large to carry :( We had planned to go to the Jaguar Reserve Wildlife Park and we met some Canadians who were going to drive us over, but it was thunderstorms the two days we were planning and so we stayed in their beach front Cabana and drank beer. We arrived in San Ignacio on Saturday and have found cheap accommodation here, so we are going to commute to Belmopan to go to hospital. San Ignacio is lovely, it has a river and is surrounded by trees. We climbeda hill just outside the town to visit some Mayan ruins yesterday. It was raining the whole time we were there, but that just meant it was quieter and no other people around.
