This weekend we decided to have a look at the north of Belize. Friday we visited a howler monkey sanctuary. We took a bus to the sanctuary which was in the middle of nowhere. We went on a guided tour and saw a troop of four young male black howler monkeys. They were really inquisitive and came right down close to us! I have some great photos of them. Friday night we stayed in Orange Walk, a town in the north of Belize. We stayed in a really cheap room above a Chinese restaurant, but I got my first hot shower in a month!
Saturday we visited the Mayan temples at Lamanai. To get to Lamanai you have to take a boat trip 27 miles up the New River. The guide pointed out lots of birds and wildlife to us on the way. Lamanai is on the side of a lagoon, and you can just see the top of the tallest temple as you approach. The temples are surrounded by jungle; it's all very serene and remote. We saw three temples and were able to climb them all. The tallest temple was 33m tall and I was pretty nervous at the top of it. We could see across the canopy of the rainforest to the lagoon beyond. There were howler monkeys roaring in the trees below us.
We spent Sunday chilling out in Orange Walk. There wasn't much to do there so we just had a late breakfast at the food court in the centre of town and spent the afternoon in a park by the river.
Hospital has been interesting the past few weeks, I have been doing A and E, ENT surgery, breast cancer clinics, medical ward rounds and tomorrow I am going to neurosurgery.
