So were in Vienna. Whats this? I hear you cry. Vienna? Yes folks. Vienna. None other than the home of cake.
We were suppost to be going to Budapest, but there was a glitch. We arrived at Bled station at 10ish on Saturday and to our DISMAY there were no trains going to Budapest, or even near there. So we took a train to Ljubljana instead, hoping that we would be able to pick up a link there, even to get us close. We were aiming for Keszthely, a lake with thermal spas and stuff. Nearish Budapest. Probably doesnt look near on the map but when you are well travelled as us, everything seems near. And within our reach like.
So when the spotty underaged "train advice assistant" told us we had just missed the train by 5 mins (and he kept repeating it, annoying bafoon) and that the only next available train was at 2am we saught transport in the form of coaches. But to no avail. So that sucked. So we had 2 options: Change The Plan, or stay in Ljubljana. And seeing as we didnt really like Ljubljana we decided to go to Vienna.
So we spent 6 hours on a train and sang pretty much the whole way. We play lots of singing games, such as Guess The Intro (where one of us dum de dums an intro and the other guesses) and Guess The Line (where we quote films) and Guess The Lyrics (you get the jist). And we had bountys and coffee. It was comfy, we were in a little carraige with 6 seats like in Harry Potter and we had it to ourselfs so we streched out facing the window, one side each and sang. For 6 hours.
We arrived in the dark and got in a cab and asked him to take us to a youth hostel. So he did. It was 21€ which isnt great but ok seeing as the last time we rolled up somewhere (Milan and the nuns) it was 30. Bonzer showers too. And seeing as we hadnt showered in a couple of days it was nice. Wed been swimming though in Lake Bled... were not skanks. Cor.
Then today we had a free breakfast that B loved and I hated. It was all synthetic ham and cheese rolls and stuff. So I found some nutella and binged. Then we found this awthome cafe called Einstein where there was loud music and arty people and pictures of Einstein all over the place. Crazy. And they let us use the internet for free! So weve booked somewhere in Budapest for tomorrow night. For 6€ which is a bit better. Then we found somewhere to stay tonight where we currently are. Its onlz 13€ so again, better than 21.
Vienna is nice but not what I expected, I dont know whether were becoming imune to the amazingness of things were seeing but it kind of looks like alot of other places weve been to. There is a Cathedral that we looked at for a bit but its black on the outside becuase its so dirty so thats not great.
In Einstein we asked them for Wien Mitte, the middle of Vienna apparently. But they all looked confused and didnt really seem to know what we were talking about. How embarrassing. So we trapsed around for a bit then headed back to the first hostel to get our bags and moved to the next one. Which by the way is in the Red Light District, "which explains all the wierd men" said B. Its true, there are loads. Bit drooly and stuff. There are windows (empty at the moment but give it an hour or so) for ladies to flaunt their stuff in. And the next door place to us is called "Haus 511" which had red lights in the windows and a picture of rude things on the sign. But its all quite amusing.
Then I had a nap. And then we found Wien Mitte and had a ridiculous meal at a ridiculous place. We ordered 2 tap waters, garlic bread, mozerella and tomatoes as a starter and penne arribiata for the second bit, all to share. The tap water alone was 5.50€. Piss take. Then the garlic bread came and that was bon but then the mozerella came and that was 10.50€ and there was half a tomato and half a lump of mozerella arranged "nicely" on the plate.
Naturally we complained. They sighed and caused more of a scene than us by surrounding us with 4 of the staff and being patronising in loud voices. So we refused to pay and said we wanted to send it back but we wouldnt let us. So we Looked Angry and cancelled the pasta but had to eat and pay for the rest. It came to 19.10€ between 2 of us. Shocking.
But then we found an exchange place (the only one open on a Sunday) and the LOVELY lady there gave us a special stamp so we would get reduced rates of commission if we used that branch elsewhere. So we will get 5% instead of 15%. Bonzer. And we got all our Hungary money and Czech money sorted so thats good. And got rid of our ruddy travellers cheques.
We have decided they are not a good idea to take travelling because you pay to buy them and then pay again to change them. Lame.
But we also recentally looked up the Reading Festival line up and it is FAB!!!! So we have been playing lots of reading themed Guess The Intros.
Until the internet is free in Budapest... over and out.
