We began with an early start, (well for Neil and Gill it was early), as we set off for Lebberston to meet Neil's parents, Tom and Gill. After a quick cuppa and introductions we all headed off in convoy for Whitby, beginning our tour at the Abbey, over looking the town.
We had the traditional fish and chips for lunch before a nice ride on the only steam bus in England. It took many years of battling red-tape before they were able to get a license to carry passengers as, under English law, a bus must exhaust from the rear. A bit difficult for a steam engine! Vernon, the owner/driver and his wife managed to annoy those in power and an amendment to the law was eventually made. Vernon is also the driver of The Hogwarts Express, the trains in Heartbeat and The Royal. Tom was lucky enough to get a postcard signed by him, sit in the cab and sound the whistle. I think Neil was a little envious. We then all walked up the hill to Captain Cook's statue and an amazing view of Whitby and the North Sea.
From Whitby we took a short drive to Robin Hood's Bay. Rather a windy bay and a steep street down to a pub at the water's edge, where Tom was brave enough to dip a few toes. He said it was freezing and we all believed him!
Tom and Gill left us here and we carried on to Scarborough. A typical seaside entertainment town. Almost as many penny-arcades as fishing boats. I'm not sure what shone brighter Tom's eyes at the games or the lights of the arcades.
The day was rounded off with a brilliant dinner back at Tom and Gill's. The company and conversation couldn't have been better!
