Hello again,
Had a day out in Delhi today, was a busy one! First off we went to the Laxmi Naryan Tample, which is a Hindu temple (the photo above). It was interesting to see the people offering flowers to the idols and then receiving the coloured dots on their forehead. After this we went to Humayun's Tomb. This is a tomb that was built about a hundred years before the Taj Mahal and shares some striking similarities to it. Our third stop was the Qutab Minar, which is really tall ornate structure surrounded by some ruins of the Delhi of old. In the morning we also went to the Lotus Temple, which is the place of worship forthe Baha'i a world faith that believe all religions worship the same God but beliefs differ because of the needs of society at the time of revelation. It was a really peaceful place. We also went to see India Gate, a memorial built in honour of Indian soldiers lost in WW1 but which is also remebers all lost Indian Soldiers.
Our driver also took us to a shopping emporium in the morning, we were sat down and shown all the wears on offer; pashminas, saris, silk scarves etc etc. Elisa was shown outift after outfit and we were offered a cup of chai. Elisa tried to politely decline but after a sharp look and a comment about insulting their culture, she accepted a cup and grimaced as she took a sip. Everytime Elisa was asked what she liked or if she liked it she said "I don't know!" everytime, the man and others in the shop laughed at her and asked if that was all she said, (lol). After Elisa was shown a million items of clothing she bought a top/dress, which was supposed to be altered but we found in the car hadn't be touched (oh well!).
For lunch we ate at slightly pricey restaurant and Elisa tried out a curry with paneer cheese, which turned out to be really nice. Who thought she wouldn't be able to eat anything, eh?! .
After lunch we went to see the Jama Masjid, a huge mosque in old delhi but only got to the front entrance because we had missed the time of admittance for non-muslims, which was a shame but the scale of this massive mosque was still plain to see. After this we did a drive by photography session of the Red Fort, (the inside bit was closed and the traffic was manic so we were unable to stop) we got some ok photos though. Our final stop was Raj Ghat, which is where Gandhi was cremated.
Was a a jam packed day but realy good. We got to see some of the more beautiful and spiritual bits of Delhi instead of just its manic side.
Tomorrow we are planning to go to the Akshardam Temple another Hindu temple before we get the train to Varnasi. It's a bit strange that we are leaving Delhi so soon but it'll be good to see the difference between the two cities.
