This morning we got up at 5:30 to offer food to the monks. This involved blessing the food then walking into the village and presenting the food to them. They then said some kind of blessing and then carried on walking. It was all a bit strange. I then went back to bed to get more zzzz.
Later on we watched a BBC documentary on buddism and budda. Apparently budda was a prince a very long time ago and founded buddism. Buddism is meant to be a way of living in harmony. However, this confused me. It is apparent to me that it has gone in the wrong direction from it's original intent. People seem to worship the person budda with all the statues rather than his teachings. I thought this only existed in Christianity but obviously not.
After watching the dvd we went to the big budda. And boy is this budda big! What gets me is the scale and expense of these really ornate temples and statues when a lot of the people surrounding them live in poverty. The people donate money to pay for these temples - no mater how rich. In my opinion, religion has a lot to answer for!
While at the big budda there were lots of pictures that depicted what happened if someone was to brake a buddist law. The pictures were quite sick and involved going to hell and cutting bits of bodies off and eating each other. I always thought of hell as a very Christian thing, obviously not.
This evening we felt a need for sugar and guess where we went? The one and only tesco - very different, but still the same world monopolizing shop.
