Hello to everyone reading this blog. I will be keep a record of my time away from the UK from now on here. I have have been in Thailand for nearly one week and I have done so much.
My flight from to Thailand was very pleasant. However, I could not sleep due to the excitment and everything else going through my head. I spent the entire 11 hours watching movies and looking at the Himalayas through the window.
I arrived in Bangkok on Friday 20th Feb at about 16:00 (09:00 uk time). Everything was a bit of a shock. The heat, the reality of the situation and the no sleep. After battling the people wanting to take me in their own taxi I found my transfer to the hotel. This was made harder with the fact that the person waiting for me was looking for a girl. Apparantley my name is very amusing to the Thai people as they can not pronounce it and think it is a girls name.
I met some other travellers in Bangkok that evening in the hotel. We spent the rest of the weekend visiting the sights, heat, sounds and smells of Bangkok. We went on a boat ride up the canals, visited a beautiful orchid farm, rode and survived many tuk-tuks, visited the grand palace, watched a pro Thai kicking boxing match and got drunk. I have came to the conclusion that everything in Bangkok is MENTAL. I was worried that my entire 2 months in Thailand would be like this.
On sunday I was picked up at the Hotel by the Co-ordinator that is looking after us. We made then made our way to Sing Buri (an area just north of Bangkok). After a couple of hours we arrived at the house where we were to stay (called the Brown house).
On Monday we were taken on a walk around the village where we are staying. There are dogs everywhere! My worst and biggest nightmare. Each house seemed to have two or three dogs that just roam about. The dogs like to bark and stand their ground as you walk past - but there are no gates to stop them and they quite often don't stop. The Thai's seem to beat them to stop them barking - as much as I hate dogs, i do not like to see this. Anyway, on the walk we were shown the internet cafe (where all the Thai kids play computer games instead), a small fish farm and learned about the Thai culture in general. I learned that each day of the week is a colour. Today is Thursday and it's colour is Orange (the uniforms change colour everyday with this). We were told about Buddism, but I don't eally understand it at the moment. Hopefully I will understand this more next week when I stay with the monks. In the evening after dinner we were given a welcome party. I was very ignorant as to what I thought this was going to be, as I thought I we were going to a bar to get drunk. However, it was a greeting from the local village people where we are staying. They played drums and danced in tradition Thai style. It was very beautiful. It was made even better with the fact that the performers were children from local primary. At the end of the performace we were presented with flowers and asked to dance with them. It was very moving - even for me.
Have to go, will update when I can soon......
