G'day Folks!
With only 10 days till christmas we have nearly reached our crimbo destination of Byron Bay. However...we have still been keeping ourselves ocupied in the mean time while slowly venturing down the east coast.
We stopped at Hervey Bay, set on 10km golden sand beach set back from the road, fringed with scrubland. With Jetties leading into the sea, Hervey Bay was a peaceful location and a great place to chill out. So in our short two day stay here we headed straight for the beach where we done just that- chilled!
Our next stop was Rainbow beach where we would spend some time before our trip to Fraser Island. This is backed by spectacular set of multicoloured sand cliffs (72 shades in total) with another stunning stretch of soft sand beach. Here we visited Tin Can Bay via ferry were we had the opitunity to feed wild dolphins! The same dolphins have returned to the bay every day for a feed for the past four generations. This is since a dolphin was rescued here from a shark attack and nursed back to health by the locals. It was fantastic to be in the water so close to the dolphins swimming right up to the shore, where we were able to feed them a tasty treat of slimy fish- nice! We also visited the great sandy National Park Cooloola section where we strolled throught the costal woodland to the Carlo sandblow, a 15 hectare expanse of sand with sweeping views east to the double island point and west over the Tin Can bay. Cooloola's ancient sands have accumulated and eroded over many thousands of years. The powerful forces of wind and water have sculpted the sandmass, creating a series of overlapping dune systems of diffrent ages- the worlds oldest recorded sequence. It was like a vast sandy desert set in between high mountain cliffs that looked onto the sea- wow! We had a few good nights at Rainbow too, mainly consisting of drinking games with our new friends in our dorm, as well as plenty of goon!!! We even made friends with the locals and had a camp fire on the beach one night. In fact...we never did make it to Fraser island guys, with sooooo much on our mind and sooooo much chaos (haha) we got our days mixed up and were still nursing a goon hang over at 11.00 am when our coach came to pick us up- Oops!! Lucky for us we were able to change it to the following Monday, this messed our Oz Experience coach up and we had to rearrange our dates, meaning we would have to skip out a few destination- what a nightmare ay!
Next Stop was Noosa, a beautiful up market beach town with good surf and plenty of sunshine, and very close to the worlds famous Australia Zoo. So we wasted no time and visited this on our first full day in Noosa. Owned by the late Steve Irwin and his family, this zoo was amazing!!! The main message echoed throughout was 'conservation through exciting education' and it couldn't have been more spot on. You could really sense the passion the keepers had for all the animals and their welfare. It was so nice to see a well keep zoo and such a possitive message broadcoast to the vistors. Here we feed elephants, stroked the Kangaroos, petted the Koalas and watched the Wildlife Warrior Show at the Crocoseum. Were the keepers brought around snakes and baby crocs for the audience to see. Before the arena was filled with dozens of tropical birds flying freely araound the audience. Then swimming through the water in the centre of the arena came the large salty croc with the keeper at the waters edge, the croc then jumped from the water to catch the dangeling meaty bait the keeper had in his hand- Snap, the sound of the jaw pressure was unbelieveable. Wouldn't wana get caught up in those nashers that's for sure! Noosa is renowed for a good surf so Lorna and I have been getting to grips with the waves and taking surfing lessons. Both of us managed to stand up on our boards- true Aussie surfer chicks! It has been great fun taking on the surf and good exercise too, we were cream crackered by the end of our first lesson. However...this didn't stop us going back for more, the following day we were straight down the beach again back on the boards.
Shout out to all you guys keeping track of our blog back home, hope you are still all enjoying following our adventures. Great to hear from you all, thanks so much for the comments and emails. Hope you are all looking forward to Christmas and are having fun at all the pre crimbo celebrations!?
