Happy New Year!
Hope you all had a great time over christmas and new year. We had a very diffrent but fun time out here in Australia. It was so strange to be down under and away from all the family at christmas time! We spent christmas along the east coast on the seaside resort of Byron Bay. This hippies town was a perfect setting, with it's chilled out atomoshphere and stunning landscape. With a long golden bay streching up to steep jagged cliffs where the lighthouse neatly seats. On christmas day we paid the local parish a visit (slightly hungover) before heading down to the beach in the blazing hot sun, while you guys back home would have been nestled in bed waiting for old St. Nic! We treated ourselves to a true Oz BBQ with Kangaroo steak, which went down a treat with the goon. Then later on in the evening we chilled with a few friends on the sea front to the sound of the bongo and tamborines- perfect!
Boxing day we hired out bikes and headed up to Byron's lighthouse to take in the spectaular views over the bay at Australia's most easternly point. Here i took a short walk down the cliff to Julians Rock, a rock formation that scatters out across the sea, from here you can see dolphins gracefuly swimming in their pods through the waves. Later we headed back to the bay with a few friends we had made in our hostle and partied the night away on the beach dancing to the beat of the i.pod speakers.
After leaving Byron behind our next stop was surf camp, this was to break the journey up between Byron bay and Sydney. Here we had more surfing lessons to scratch up on our newly learnt skills. The waves here were pretty strong so i was quite a battle to stand up on our boards, but very good exercise that's for sure.
Our final stop in Oz- Sydney!!! We couldn't believe we had reached our final destination and we were going to be seeing 2009 in here. What a city, it reminded me very much like London but a lot cleaner, newer and chilled out. New years eve was just perfect, we meet up with our friends Ange, Vic and Jack and spent the day chilling out with our picnic and box of goon on a park overlooking Harbour Bridge. The sun was beaming, must have been in the late 30's! Later afternoon we made our way across Sydney Harbour via ferry to the North side of Sydney, the streets were bustling with people and the atmosphere was great. We all made our way up to Ange's friends flat where Claire was hosting a New Years gathering. The view from here flat was just perfect looking out straight onto Sydney Harbour bridge where all the action would take place. There was a short family firework display at 9.00pm and then a light parade at 10.00pm where all the boats along the harbour were decorated in lights floating gracefuly along the harbour. Then wearing our party hats and armed with our champagne glasses we waited for midnight to strike. 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1...Fireworks filled the sky in a rainbow of colours shooting up from behind the bridge, then from across the arche of the bridge itself like arrows out of a bow, then along the water, then from behind the tall office buildings that surrounding the quay- WOW, it was just to much to take in at once, the mood was amazing! We were still pinching ourseleves 10mins into the fireworks, we couldn't believe we were lucky enough to be there!!!
