Season Greetings Possums,
We finally made it to Fraser Island- YAY, and it was most definatly worth the wait. We set off on our 4WD tour bus on 15th December and took the ferry over to this wonderous island. 2km from the coast of Rainbow beach is the worlds largest sand island, home to creeks, sand dunes, tranquil rainforests, coloured sand pinnacles, Manheno shipwreck and over 40 lakes. We had three days and two nights to take in this stunning island that has gradually formed over many years. The island also has a lot to offer in terms of wildlife with dingo inhabbiting the island and sealife surrounding it's shores. The waters were strictly off limits, with man eating Tiger Sharks swimming only meters away from the beach. On our first day of the trip we took a stunning drive along 75 mile beach taking in the surroundings, stopping at Eli Creek and then heading all the way up to Indian Head where after a climb we could take in the breath-taking views along the coastline. Later we explored the Manheno shipwreck a steam liner used for exporting goods between Melbourne, Tazmania and New Zealand before being converted into a nursing ship during world war 2. It had been washed up on Fraser after the engine packed up and there she has remained since. It was amazing to see so much history creeping up from the sand. On our second day we took a 2km walk through Wanggoolba creek & rainforest. The rainforest was beautiful with hundreds of diffrent types of trees and swinging veins. The creek itself was a fresh water creek that we were able to drink from. After the walk we visited Lake Birrabean-WOW! Blue waters and white sand all set in surrounding lush green hills, it was just like paradise. The second lake we visited was called Boomanjin, very diffrent from Birrabean. In fact the chances of us stepping foot into it if we hadn't been on the tour were pretty slim, with it's brown tinted water and mangroves boardering the lake. However this lake is known for it's natural properties. The tree on the lake are in fact tea trees that have stained the water, acting as a nourishing agent for both your hair and skin- with this in mind we were straight in there! On our last day of the tour we visited the of our lakes, lake wabby. Set on a huge sandblow of golden sand it was amazing. The emerald green colour of the lake againist the sand and the blue cloudless sky. After taking in the views we made our way down to the dunes for some sand boarding. This was a little scary at first but a great buzz as you slide your way down the side of the dune plunging straight into the lake. We both loved Fraser Island and were a little sad to bid her goodbye and head back to Noosa.
Back in Noosa we visted the National Park taking the coastal walk around the parks boards. It was a nice walk stopping at dolphin point we were not lucky enough to spot dolphins but lucky enough to spot both Turtles and Rays. Our final stop of the walk was Alexandra Bay- a nudeist beach. Lorna and I were like to little kids giggling behind our books with our sunnies on, especialy when the rather well endowed man decided to lay meters away from us on the beach, we didn't know where to look- hehe!
Our next stop was Surfers Paradise one of the livelyist spots along the Gold Coast. It's flashy, trashy and always up for a big party- think Benidorm or Magaluf! During our stay at surfers we vistied two parks, Dreamworld begining the first. Dreamworld was good fun, think we must have gone on most of the rides although I chickened out on the The Big Drop and let Lorna take this beast on alone! We also went to Wet n Wild, this was another fun filled day out. We took on all the slides including the Streamline that sends you down at almost a vertical drop, apart from sending our bikini bottoms half way up our bums and nearly losing our tops- it was a great buzz, haha! Being in Surfers it would have been rude not to go on a night out, so we booked ourselves onto the backpackers bar crawl The Big Night Out. Armed with our cowgirl hats, glow sticks and free drinks tickets a coach load of us all headed into town with the reps and we partied the night away at Shooters bar, Melbas and Cocktails n Dreams. We didn't get back to our hostle till around 5 that morning, it was a eventful but fun night.
Hope all you guys back in England had a great christmas with loads of good food and festive fun. Thanks for all our crimbo messages. Little bit behind on the blog at the mo due to the festive celebrations, however as soon as we get the chance there will be more Oz updates winging there way to you. Have a great new years!!!
