G'day from the sand beachs of Oz to the green grass of home!
Our next stop was the buzzing town of Airlie Beach, a welcoming change to Townsville. Small in size but humming constantly to the sound of a party somewhere, with bars, clubs, resturants and a 24hour lagoon with manmade beach and palm trees- all in walking distance from each other. We made a great group of mates here all with the same thing in mind- hitting the Oz nightlife and partying on into the small hours!!! Some nights we didn't even make it out to the clubs though, we were all so content chilling on the balcony with several boxes of goon (Oz casket of wine), having a good ol giggle with some drinking card games and then heading down to the lagoon for a late night dip. It was mad and such good fun!!!
But the days were never wasted, with the stunning Whitsunday Islands only being a short sail away, we booked ourselves onto a trip to take it all in. The blue/green waterways surrounding the islands are part of a marine park falling within the great barrier reef world heritage site that streches from Cape York in the north to Bundaberg in the south. These scenic islands are the tip of lush green mountains fringed with coral and are mostly uninhabbited. We explored some of the 90 islands including Hamilton island, Daydream island and Hazelwood island to name but a few. We took a short walk through one island to take in the stunning views over White Haven Beach, the best beach in Australia. Before sinking our toes into the pure white flour sand for a buffet lunch. With the surrounding turquiose waters and evergreen backdrop it was a paradise setting. We even had the chance to snorkle in our fetching stinger suits where we were greeted by a bed of colourful coral, home to Sting Rays, jelly fish, turtles and many kinds of fish.
It was so sad to leave Airlie Beach behind us and to say goodbye to all the friends we had made, but the cattle ranch awaited us out in the bush. It was time for us to get our fingers dirty and experience the Oz way of life out in the country. We felt like real Oz cowgirls learning how to crack the wip and ride the mechanical bull, and this was all before bedtime. The following day we mastered the art of lassoing before competing in a tournament to round up a real goat!!! Lorna decided to give this a miss, so it was me in the ring representing Essex all the way. Failing to round up my selected goat with my rope it was a wild chase around the pen to catch it...and I was triumphant with my prize- haha! Then it was time to mount our horses and get into the saddle to heard up the goats and transfer them to their grazing field. This was so random, but pretty good fun-ha ha!
