Left Escanaba around 8:00 this morning, headed for Copper Harbor, MI, which is at the very top of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Drove across the lower portion of MI, heading West on Route 2, then veered off North through the Porcupine Mountains. And yes, I did see a porcupine; unfortunately he was dead on the side of the road. The area is beautiful, so heavily treed, and lush. Even though it's August, we've seen several trees already starting to get their fall colors.
We bought an annual pass for the Michigan state parks, and have entered at least 5 just today! Figured we might as well get good use out of it. At Porcupine Mtn. State Park we walked a short way to a waterfall, pictures in today's album. Then made a quick entrance to McLain State Park to look at the lake, and discovered there was a light house, so took that quick route for a picture. We then headed for the hi-lite of this area, Lake in the Clouds. It's this lake in the valley between mountains that is just gorgeous! There are pics of this too!
We crossed into the upper portion of the peninsula over the Houghton Lift Bridge. It actually rises up, or elevates, unlike a draw bridge, which splits in the middle and rises at angles. This was so cool; I would love to see it in motion!
Took another scenic route, with great views of Lake Superior. Arrived in Copper Harbor a little before 6. Tried to hit some shops, but most were closing. We checked in to our latest motel, and it's again, something from the past! I will say that you could not beat it for a view. We are literally right on the water. We have a sliding patio door (with no lock) and there is no A/C, but I can't believe you would ever need it; I've closed up the windows, and am still chilly.
Did one more drive, the Brockway Mountain Drive. It was a very steep climb, but the views were spectacular! Stopped for ice cream on the way back, and are ready to call it a night.
BTW, we have not had cell phone service all day! Talk about feeling cut off from the world!
Night, talk to you tomorrow.
