Manaus was a stop-gap to rejuvenate after spending 6 days on a boat. We emailed ahead and secured accommodation with a fellow couch surfer and her family. We arrived later than expected, with dodgy characters asking us questions….what? huh?...our Portuguese is very impressive JWe were greeted at the door by an all so welcoming german pincher named Brownie. Our adventures with him had only just started…….first impressions can always be deceiving and this dog was the devil incarnated! Maz got the brunt of his temper, which involved biting at her ankles when she disciplined him, consistent barking, leaving poo presents in front of our bathroom!!! It was like a comedy sketch…..Maz accidentally stepped in his poo and her being an avid Buddhist follower, somehow forgot her teachings and waged war….this being placing him in his little pink cardigan that was specially made for him which he desperately hated!!! Cookieon their other dog had a lovely temperament. She loved us so much that we found her chewing on our worn underwear........eewww!
We cooked nearly every night, replenishing ourselves with vegetables and fruits that we had oh so missed. We were introduced to a brilliant soup house…..yes you´ve guessed it….they only served soup!!! Delicious! We were in heaven, all you can eat buffet…scrumptious! Great business idea we thought…especially with the British weather! The coffee is to die for, just the perfect texture and taste when made by our host.
The local Opera house, the oldest in Brazil, is where we both saw our first ballet!!! Romeo and Juliet! Hehehe! It was very entertaining, the orchestra were amazing and the ballet was suitably adapted to the Amazonian area. The opera house was decorated in a European style, with materials imported from Europe (The chairs were over 100 years old!). The square where the Opera house was situated was perfectly lit for Christmas, making us feel slightly emotional, wishing we could experience this with you all. A few mishaps with trying to book our onward travel to tefe, which resulted in arriving at the ticket booth at 6am in the morning, only to find a queue awaiting us J We find that activities always take a while, not yet in the flow of this Brazilian way of life! Eventually we managed to secure a hammock spot on the Rei David boat.
On with our travels, having bought liquor flavored sweets (especially for Maz)……she´s changed so much you´d never recognize her from her eating habits……white bread, chocolates, ICE CREAM, butter, cakes, biscuits……..not the woman we all knew before this adventure, had no idea it would change her in just 8 weeks!!! A Miracle!
We safely boarded and awaited the unfolding of the next drama!
