Hawaii is 22 hours behind Fiji, so to fly here we crossed the international date line and went back in time, consequently we experienced Sunday 10th May twice! Eat your heart out Dr Who we can time travel too.

First stop was on Big Island, also known as Hawaii, where the active vocanoes are. We stayed in a bed a breakfast near Hilo and hired a convertable Chrysler. Our land lady was very helpful, and with her guidance we visited; lava trees, lava tubes, walked through massive lava fields and on the last day took a sunrise boat trip to see fresh lava pouring into the Pacific, something we both have always wanted to see.

Next stop was the island of Oahu, home of Honolulu, Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbour. We had a very long day in Pearl Harbour visiting Battleship Missouri where the Japanese surrender was signed and various memorials to naval ships destroyed during the attack. Abby was struck by the irony of the number of Japanese visitors.
