As luck would have it, the rain has arrived prompting the comfort of the Rijks Museum's cry. Rembrandt makes use of light to highlight various aspects of his realistic and detailed scenes. A giant, dollhouse (oxymoron?), ornate furniture and a collection of portraits whose eyes seem to follow you (creepy and great). As I wander the halls, I think about how people don't create work like this anymore. How long did the giant "Night Watch" take Rembrant? I suppose people do create art like this, it has just changed, become more modern and abstract. In the 17th century it must have seemed very novel to visually capture an event and preserve it forever, a concept not commonplace until the birth of photgraphy in...? Anyone know the answere here? Again my semantic memory fails me- thank goodness for the (non-passcode protected) iPhone. Just as the 'museum yawns' set in, we exit to the whispy rain, pop our umbrella and hop on the tram down to Dam square.
