"Well, you two clearly aren't gay, are you."
Ummmm, Sara and I look at each other quite clear that we aren't gay, yet curious as to why the young (gay), toned man in a tight shirt is pointing this out to us as he rings through a couple road pops and a bottle of wine. An interesting comment non the less and the second time, today, this inquiry has been made.
Turns out it's gay pride weekend in Amsterdam! The streets (and canals) are oozing with rainbow flags, scantly dressed human beings and thunderous bass emanating from marvelous sound systems. The boat parade is the focal point of the day, where local businesses, organizations and groups of people decorate and present their themed boats through the Prisengracht canal. It was truly a sight...
Some highlights were the Gay Escort boat packed full of a variety of men in white t-shirts, waving like royalty and dancing their faces off to the thud of their own personal techno dance party. "10 Years of Gay Escorts", their inflatable sign proudly proclaimed.
There was also the red and black boat, of what theme I'm not sure, but it was PACKED with stacked, olive skinned men in g-strings, who pulsed to the beat. Their boat had a large inflatable, phallic, red rocket on the back which they had to somewhat deflate in order to fit under the bridge.
The last boat of memory consisted of both men and women performing a choreographed dance to an amped up version of a CC Peniston song, circa 1993. They wore white t-shirts and fur scarves and performed their perfectly synchronized arm movements from their stationary positions on the boat.
It truly was a glorious sight, I've been to pride in New York and that comes in a clear second to this spectacle. We carried on to the 'gay' street where we were instructed by a local to find the 'homo- show'. The blow up doll being hoisted up onto the top of the medical support volunteer van tipped me off. We found yet more amazing bass lines down this alley but no more of a homo show than we had already experienced.
