Entering week 4, although it feels like its MONTH 4!! Its been a very busy settling in period. The "honeymoon" period is now over and the working life is really beginning! Fixtures are now running my life, however it is very rewarding when you see your teams doing well.
Left the uk on the 26th August, feeling nervous, sad, rather excited and also worried... Had I made the right decision!? Would I settle in? Would I enjoy my job? Was I capable of living away from England.....? These questions were soon answered on arrival at Nairobi International airport... Let the adventure begin!!!
Braeburn School had ensure we wouldnt have too much time to sit and think of all our friends and family we had left behind. We were thrust straight into an induction programme designed to settle you into Kenyan living. Trips to the local supermarkets (Nakumat!!!), The Elephant Orphanage and also a day trip to Naivasha! This gave each of us the opportunity to see all the glorious, spectaculr and exciting things we would be able to see and do!
Work soon began and the transition from secdonary teaching to Primary commenced! Very different! My language had to change from teaching year 11 to now teaching year 1!!! This is something that I have mastered and Im really enjoying playing "Slippery Pig" "Fox and Hounds" "Shrimps and Crabs" "Pirate Ship"!!!! This is what they pay me to do! PLay in the sunshine!! Brilliant! (I do also teach year 7-10 so a small amount of planning is needed!)
Kenya is so much greener (if thats even a word) than I thought it would be. The roads have no markings and are very dusty, this adds charracter! People drive pretty much wherever they like, undertaking is not unusal! Matatu fly up and down the raods (thesse are great fun to journey on!!) Openair sellers line the streets selling anything from puppies/kittens to furntiture, fruit and veg to Dvds, rugs and plant pots... You can find yourself some orthentic bargains here though!!
