Due to technical difficulties and a total lack of inclanation, I haven't written in a while, and there's an awful lot to report, so apologies for the rambling length of this entry!
A fantastic Christmas was had by all, with a huge amount of eating, drinking and general merriment in various peoples' family homes. After Christmas, Mum, Dad, Olly and I headed South to Margaret River to do a bit of a wine region tour - basically just more drinking and eating (which is what the whole last two weeks seems to have been about!)...the wineries were not really my scene - I'm far more interested in finding cheap wine I can drink by the bottle than whether it has oakey notes and a fruity aftertaste, but hey, we got plenty of free wine to taste, so I wasn't going to complain!
The country side was beautiful...although there was a slightly touch-and-go moment when someone (who quite clearly wasn't me...honest!) suggested that on our drive down the coast it would be lovely to take in the scenic route marked on the map. So, 5 minutes into a drive in the middle of nowhere (and Australia does the middle of nowhere like nowhere else on Earth), Mum casually asked "How much fuel do we have?" About 30 seconds later, the fuel light came on. So, with barely any fuel, miles from anywhere, we all sat and watched the SatNav map, waiting and waiting and waiting for the main road to appear. It totally detracted from the whole 'scenic route' experience I can tell you. Eventually the road appeared and we found fuel. The story is actually a lot less dramatic that it seemed at the time, but worth reporting, I think!
New Year was a surprisingly sophisticated affair for me, what with me being used to just solid 24 hour drinking chez Sherry. Here everyone who came brought a dish and a wine to match and we had a delicious dinner party...It was a pretty quiet one for me though, because I had my first day of work on New Years Day!
I've got myself a job, working on a dive boat for a dive company based in the city - Every morning (or 5 so far!) I come into the shop in the city and pick up the customers in a minibus and drive them to Fremantle, where our boat takes us over to Rottnest, an island just off Perth. Then we go out for 2 dives, then head back for Freo. It's awesome...the boat stuff is all totally new, so the learning curve is pretty steep (oh how I love those!), but the people are fab, and being out on the boat and diving is just so much fun. The diving is great - I've seen 2 huge rays so far - but it's pretty different to Dahab...plus we have to wash all the customers' kit for them!! So far I've badly cut my finger, bruised both my shins and nearly ripped off my thumb nail but I'm loving it!
So, that's it for the moment...I'm going to be working hard for the forseable future, but will keep everyone up to date with all my various injuries!
