Ems and Steve Travelling
Hey!
Sorry we haven't written for a few days but we have been busy! On Sunday we went to Waterbom the water park in the centre of Kuta. It was a hot day but there was lots of shade so really cool. The best ride was the boomerang which you went down on a double ring there was also a vertical slide and one with bumps in that I took off from! That evening we went to Bubba Gump shrimp for dinner (sorry Rachel!). We then went to Hard Rock to watch the football which didnt start until 11pm here and went on til 1am. Most of the Balinese support England I think that may be because their team isn't in it!
On Monday (yesterday) we went on a 'cultural tour' of Bali. We visited places where they hand made Batik, wood carvings, silver jewellery and paintings. We also saw a Hindu dance showing the fight between good and evil. We stopped for lunch at Kintamani volcano (still active - last erupted in 1994) and ate our buffet overlooking the huge mountain. We also went to a traditional Balinese housing compound where we learnt all about the Balinese traditions (such as burying baby placentas and eating porcupines!) and a Hindu temple where Steve had to wear a sarong (David Beckham eat your heart out). Finally we drove through some rice paddy fields. Was a really great day and really felt like we saw the real Bali as Kuta is very commericalised. For dinner we ate at a restaurant in kuta square and then had an early night.
We got up at 6am this morning and drove to Ubud and did a cookery course. First we went to the traditional Balinese markets and saw and smelt loads of fresh ingredients such as spices, fruit and vegetables. I also bought some tiger balm made out fo cloves. Me and Steve tried a drink in the market which was very jelly like and slimy (not nice) lol! We then went to a guest house and had morning tea (hibiscus tea, cakes, fruit and some rice dishes) and then learnt how to cook some traditional Balinese dishes. We used all fresh ingredients and lots of spices especially chillis! We then ate the food we had made for lunch. A lot of it was very spicy and rich tasting but yummy all the same (except the tofu!). We then had green pancakes for dessert but these like the desserts we had at morning tea had a very rubbery texture. We then went back to the hotel and chilled by the pool and then went out for dinner. We are getting up earlyish again tomorrow to go on an elephant trek safari so we'll let you know how that goes soon!
Bye bye xxx
