There was no signal at all in Cape Tribulation and the internet was so expensive...but i wrote everything down just so i could accurately update my blog!
We started our trip to Cape Tribulation off on a very panicky start! lying asleep with the sun shining through our window at our hostel in Cairns seemed was so relaxing until....i jumped in my sleep and shouted...we have missed our bus!It was 7.25 and our bus was leaving at 7.30!we hadn't packed and we had to check out...everything was everywhere but in our rucksacks!!we leapt out of our beds and like sleepy robots running overtime we apcked, stripped our beds and i ran downstairs to catch the bus....it hadn't arrived yet!!! Just at the moment it puled up but the others were still upstairs packing and we hadn't checked out so i smiled sweetly and said we were at that moment cj\hecking out and pleasae could they wait for 2 seconds...the lady replied with 'we are already late and we area running on a tight schedule so you better hurry! AHHH. i ran into reception and li\uckily the ohters stepped out of the lift!
stupid alarm clock...or silly deep sleepers!
Once in the bus we settled down to nap when the bus driver announced that she was going to talk to us through a micrphone the duration of the journey. It was actually really interesting and very funny, she told us about the area, some of the nature, funny stories and facts. The landscape was incredible, vast rainforested hills and flat grassy plains stetched out in front of us (i really hadn't expected the landscape to be like it was). We then started driving along the coastal road with rainforest to our left and sandy beaches to our right.
'The rainforest meets the reef"
Along th way to Cape tribulation we stopped off to take a river tour up the Daintree river where we hunted down crocodiles on the banks....there's a crocodile if you look really closely next to that big branch...you can just sbout see its snout!! The tour went along those lines though was very interesting and we did see a few snouts!
We then continued driving through the rainforest and stopped off in the middle of the rainforest to take a walk through along a boardwalk. The guide told us all about the various trees and plants and how they adapt in different ways. Some explode to disperse their seeds while others fire out seeds to spread them around. There os one plant called a 'wait-a-while' which is covered in thorns and spikes and dangles down from trees. if you walk passed and brush against it you get hooked onto u\its spikes and it makes you 'wait-a-while!' The indigenous peple who inhabited and who still inhabit the area use it as a mechaninsm to trap animals! She told us all about the aboriginal culture and about the relationship they have with the rainforest and other people inhabiting the area.
We carried on walking through the rainforest until the tour guide told us to look out for little green things crawling around. We found some and were told to pick them up and suck/bite thier bottoms because what they secrete contains a high source of vitamins in the form of follic acid. SHe siad you'd get a little shock and then taste something lemony and so acidic that your tongue will go numb! At that moment i licked an ants bottom...it was delicious!
We then drove on to Cape Tribulation and got dropped off ar our hostel.
On arrival we booked oursleves into activities and tours.
That afternoon we attended an exotic fruit tasting class. We sat in a circle around a table with a huge bowl of strange, very colorful forms. We tried about 12 diffeent fruits, all we very intense flavours. One was incredibly sweet, another very sour while others had very tough textures compared to those which were incredibly juicy. One even tasted of apple pie and custard! We were told about where the fruits originated, how they can be eaten, what conditions they grew in etc...
I can't remember the names at this moment but i did take a photo of them written on a board!! AFter the tasting we went round their fruit plantation. The couple who own the farm omport seeds from various countries and grow the fruit on their own plantation in the middle of the rainforest....possible retirement plan!! Newspaper article.
