Got woken up this morning by the parrots (pictured) shrieking at the top of their lungs. They seem much less cute now. It was quite alarming how much pain they sounded like they were in! Got up and showered and headed for Karijini stopping for fuel and breakfast (protein shake and a ham and cheese croissant). Feeling less than well slept and now ridden with guilt for the grease I had just devoured I fell into an uneasy sleep. I awoke and decided that I was in need of an ice cream - diet is NOT going well and I will return from this trip looking as though I have swallowed the former Emma. Anyway, I digress...
Arriving at Tom Price we visited the supermarket and stocked up on bottled water and horrific looking canned meals. Ate a semi-ok Chinese of beef and cashew and Red Breeze restaurant and then purchased my third ice cream of the day. Oh dear. Needless to say, I was using my female problems as an excuse to severely over-indulge in frozen, sugary treats.
We arrived in Karijini at 4pm and decided to head towards the Eco Retreat camping site but not go in as we were unwilling to pay to stay there. I say we, I mean Charlotte, who seemed to have an aversion to pay for anything she didn't deem worthy enough. Anyway it was still too early to go into the site so we headed for Oxer Lookout, a place that we later read was the park's calling card. Believing we peaked too early we walked the 100m or so down to the lookout which was a platform precariously placed on the cliff face. The lookout was where the 4 gorges (Hancock, Joffre, Weano and Red) all met. It was spectacular. I'm sure the pictures don't do it justice but it was just such an incredible sight, and it definitely got us raring to go for tomorrow.
Headed back to the Eco Retreat where we managed to avoid paying, much to Charlotte's egotism and my disgust. It was unbelievably hot and humid and a shower did little in the way of cooling me down. There was a storm approaching and the thunder and lightning were menacing but thrilling to watch.
