So after chaotically packing all my stuff up at Sundancer and bidding a very fond farewell to Laurie I made the journey from Freo to Perth, lugging around all my stuff which proved to be a sweaty endeavour. I met Charlotte there at 10 and she informed me that she had already spoken to the rental people and that the price had soared as, despite what I had been told by Sarah, the original figure did not include insurance or the outback fee. However, I managed to barter ever so slightly with the manager and got the car for a further reduced price of $30/day, outback fee of $10/day and a reduced full insurance fee of $20/day ($60/day in total). Plus he threw in bedding and a fold up table and chairs for good measure!
So pockets feeling distinctly lighter, off we set on our journey up north... By going an hour south so I could pick up my bank card from Amy. Another detour past the farm Charlotte was staying on up near Swan Valley so she could retrieve her forgotten item and finally we were properly on our way. We had a stop at the Pinnacles, these strange rock formations in a desert-like area in Nanbung National Park. Light was fading fast and as our insurance didn't cover us past 6pm (roo awakening hour) we had to quickly find a caravan park or somewhere to stop on the recently purchased WikiCamps app (a godsend we were soon to realise).
We ended up in the fishing village of Cervantes, which I thought aptly represented a good setting for one of the many horror stories that were suddenly racing through my mind. It was almost desolate, except the caravan park which we managed to park right next door to in a café car park, and sneakily used their showers and toilets. Cooked a dinner of egg fried rice which subsequently burnt, and destroyed the bottom of the pan... Great start.
