We arrived at the hotel ten minutes before dinner, so instead of making a bit of an effort for our last night with the group I went as I was. Scruffy sweaty clothes, dirty pumps and a damp bikini underneath, I'm definitely embracing the traveller ways. It was nice to see almost everyone, we went to a nice restaurant in a very touristy part of town. I haven't seen much of Sanur yet but from what I can tell it's all about the tourists, it'll be nice to have options. Everyone wanted to know about the Gili islands because most of them are heading there next, it didn't sound like we'd missed much except for climbing Mount Bromo the pictures looked pretty awesome. After dinner we found a weird little bar for cocktails and live music, it was full of Australians who enjoyed karaoke, pies and younger women by the look of them. Some of the guys stayed up to watch the football, even though it's the World Cup I still can't bring myself to be interested.
We made ourselves get up early to say goodbye as some were leaving early to go home. Breakfast was the usual G Adventures hotel crap, after having lovely food for the last week I couldn't bring myself to eat the cold stale rubbish that was on offer, will I miss this....no!
Cheryl was coming to stay with me for a couple of nights so we left pretty early to find the final hotel of the trip. I can't tell you how excited I am at the thought of unpacking for the last time, for 5 days I can leave everything lying around until I leave to fly home on Wednesday night....and all those things I've been carrying around just incase can go in the bin! I did plan on shopping but didn't plan on spending money going to the Gili islands for a week so my bag will be lovely and light. Those who thought I might bring you back a little momento, you might be disappointed sorry. I was really nervous getting to the hotel, I'd searched for so long to find the perfect place to end my trip but now realising it was only £32 a night maybe it wouldn't be as good as I'd hoped. But because my expectations are now so low, I am over the moon with my room! I have my own little apartment...massive bed and patio leading to the pool, kitchen, huge bathroom, tv with lots of English speaking channels, as many illegal DVDs as I can watch and wifi that works!
Oh and before I forget, something I don't remember seeing for years but it's always worth waiting for.....someone trying to walk through a closed patio door.....luckily it was Cheryl not me....hilarious!
We decided to walk to the beach to find somewhere for lunch, it wasn't quite as close as we'd thought, 15 minutes till we saw sand and then maybe another 10 minutes to find civilisation but a lovely beach all the same. It's really windy here, it makes a change to there being no breeze and sweating all the time. There are lots of kite surfers, it seems to be the place to do it and it's fun to watch them...lots of normal kites too. After lunch we decided to keep walking and explore, maybe find the only supermarket so we could cook our own dinner. We walked for around 5 hours, it was a long path along the beach and I lost count of the times we heard 'you want massage' and 'you come look in my shop' and 'hello where you from'. That night I made pasta and we watched DVDs, first proper night in for almost 3 months and it was so nice not to have to think about getting dressed and going out.
The next few days were spent on the beach, eating and reading...I'm now on my 10th book, shame I didn't consider reading anything educational (bit late now).
In the evenings the walk back to the hotel was always interesting. The wasteland that was deserted in the morning was now full of people flying kites of all shapes and sizes, some enormous ones...it made me wonder how many people it took to hold onto them. I stood and watched them for a while, I asked a couple of people what it was all about but nobody understood a word I was saying.
On Monday Cheryl left me to meet her friend.....for the first time since I've been away.....I am alone! I'm sorry to say bye to her, we've spent lots of time together and I've enjoyed her crazy stories. We arranged to meet for dinner the following night which was nice...I don't think spending the last night of my trip alone would have been much fun. As we were leaving the restaurant I saw two familiar faces, Helen and Cela again...they just can't escape us. We all went for a drink in the only bar with music, it reminded me of a scene from a bad 80's film. I made friends with a lovely Irishman, Paddy (obviously)! We stayed out to watch the football and tried to think of how I could give up work and be a bum forever, reading 10 fictional crappy books in 12 weeks probably isn't going to help me.
I had a pretty good last day, lunch with my new friend and he made sure I got off to the airport ok (probably to make sure I actually left the island). It was nice to have someone to wave me off and even better having help with my bags.
As soon as I got in the taxi the feeling I didn't want and wasn't expecting... I don't want to go home yet....just yet.
I really can't wait to see everyone, especially Jessica and Dylan. I know everything will be exactly as it was when I left and I'll just pick up where I left off....but hopefully with a few changes for the better and more exciting things to come.
