We left phnom penh early this morning to head for Kampong Thom, a small town on the way to Siem Reap. It will take 3houes by bus. Luckily we got to watch 2 films both in English! Yeehah!
Wte arrived in Kampong Thom around lunch and headed over the local market to check our the produce. I tried a banana in sticky rice, cooked in a banana leaf. The boys tried done dried salted clams, tame compared to the bugs they tried the other night!
We then travelled into rural area along a dirt road. We arrived at an area with some temples from the 7th century, which showed some Hindu style architecture. It was do bloody hot though it was hard to function and I started being a bit silly (well more than normal) with encouragement from Paap. So I didn't really take in much of what our guide was saying.... Oops!
What Ido remember was that these temples were pre-Angkor and some were bombed during the American war. A few are in good condition and some are being restored. There was also a lot of walking, and persistent local hotls trying to sell scarves? Hehe! I told you I wasn't paying attention...
We then headed to our village homestay. We arrived late afternoon and our sleeping quarters were basic thin mattress on the ground with a small pillow and mosquito net. Every few beds had sheets around them for a little privacy.
We went for a walk through the village and met some of the locals. I played some soccer with the local boys who were all very cute and keen to show off their moves. One of the little babies had six fingers! Freak! Just kidding, he was very cute too!
The family had made us dinner and it was a simple, a soup with vegetables, pork with potatoes, carrots and rice with bananas for dessert. Later they gave us some young corn that had been stir fried with chilli... That was delish.
We ate by candlelight and afterwards we listened to Long talk about the history of Cambodia and time during and after the Khmer Rouge. It was really interesting and I don't think it is easy to talk about that time got an Khmer person.
An early night and hopefully some sleep awaits....
