Hello, had a busy few days. On the last day in Beijing, we wondered around Wangfujing which is the main shopping centre (very similar to our Oxford Street). Quite a sunny day with music and water fountain displays that dance with the music. Went down the street of Culture and Tradition where we tried coconut juice and had a look at bugs and scorpions for sale. Wasnt tempted to try these of course and the scorpions were still alive!
That night we caught an 12 hour train to Xi'an and the room we stayed in on the train had 6 berths. Some old rockers stayed at the bottom where we discovered that chinese people do not worry about passing wind in public. Nice.
Finally we arrived in Xi'an, seems alot more relaxed than Beijing. We saw the Bell tower and Drum tower. The Bell Tower is in the centre of the city and the inner city is surrounded by a huge 600 year old wall. We discovered that Xi'an was the capital of China 2000 years ago and this is the place to go for ancient Chinese history.
Emma: I decided that evening to try accupuncture where i had needles sticking out of me. (yes mum, i know!) very painless and i very much recommend it as it works!
Today we went to see the Terracotta Army. There is no doubt it is the eighth wonder of the world. The Emperor Qin believed that his soul would continue to reign after he died beneath the ground therefore he ordered a palace and warriors to be built. There are over 8,000 life size warriors with life size horses and chariots etc all in battle formation. No two are identical, each were painted according to their rank and personality. We have many photos of this!
We found a nice bar in the hostel, lovely atmosphere with cheap drinks. We met a lovely swedish couple who we are sharing our room with, and had a drink with some people from Canada and America.
Tonight we're hoping to go to a dumpling party. We shall let you know how this goes... :)
Lots of love. x
