So it's become tradition that when I am in Bagan I get in the kitchen with my sous chef Matthew and make a roast! Last year it was roast pork so this year we did roast chicken.
I went off to market with Sarah & Richard first thing to buy the chickens.....not the most pleasant thing to do with a hangover. I like visiting the market but the meat section is just a little bit wrong! If you get there early it means there is less time for the flies to settle on the meat :-/ so hence the reason for my early visit!
Matt & I ventured into the kitchen at 1.30, the first thing you have to do is get rid of the flies and ants oh and make sure we had deet on to stop the bites! Yes bites from the kitchen, sounds appealing doesn't it! But anybody that read my cottage pie post will see that I forgot to put deet on & am now covered in bites :-(
In order to get through the nightmare of the kitchen we normally have a few drinks, today's roast day consisted of a few gin & tonics, when that ran out we moved onto the cooking wine as it was the closest thing we had available and then a bottle of bubbly! Food was meant to be served at 6:30 but we got a bit behind (might have had something to do with the amount of alcohol consumed) oh and the slow oven!
Food was finally served an hour late and the roast consisted of chicken, roast potatoes (including Matt's recipe of marmite potatoes which were yummy) veg, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puddings and a red wine jus!
Everyone seemed very pleased with the feast and surprisingly it was all very delicious!
After we'd eaten I realised that my toe was really hurting....I managed to trip over in the kitchen whilst cooking and hit my toe on a brick much to Matt's amusement who just rolled around with laughter rather the helping! It turns out that rather than being bruised as suspected Dr Laurens thinks it's broken! Another injury to add to the list #alwayshurtingmyself
The evening consisted of more drinkies which resulted in me passing out on the bed fully clothed whist everyone was still drinking and then waking up with a raging hangover #neverdrinkingagain!
Must be someone else's turn to cook next time :-)
