Halloween has always been my favourite festival. So visiting Salem- the site of the witch hunt hysteria was a must on my travel itinery.
Each year the town, just north of Boston, hosts a month long Halloween festival. My expectations were high. Arriving late in the afternoon, by the time I'd shuffeled through the quirkey shops full of witch craft oddities, stopped to give my blistered feet some attention and visited the witch museum 2 minutes before closing there wasn't really much left to do.
I wondered around the streets, snapping pics of decorated gardens and popped into the sweetie shop for a turtle (pecan, caramel & chocolate). I hoped that the two and a half hours before my schedualed night tour would pass by quickly.
i ate swordfish at the Copper Pot cafe and got very annoyed when the waitress gave me the bill before I'd even finished eating! grrrr, it's an American thing apparently.
By 8pm I was cold and starting to get anxious about the train ride back to Boston, alone. I bought a novelty witch head ornament to add to my growing collection of Christmas tree decorations and set of to join the start of the night tour.
Expecting to be scared I was a bit dissappointed. Although the tour was interesting and informative about the events of the 1690's the hightlight for me was the arrival of two random people (in no way connected to the tour) dressed as the main charecters from the horror films Halloween and The Grudge. This tour in Salem was no where near as scary, or fun, as the one in Edinburgh, Scotland.
I skipped off 10 minutes early to catch the train back to Bosotn, checking frequently over my shoulder as I hot footed it to the deserted station. eeeek!
