Santiago to Pucón, tales from the savage ...
I arrived in Pucón yesterday evening after a 12-hour bus journey, which didn´t feel too bad. I must be becoming a seasoned traveller (before I´d grumble about a couple of hours on a bus). I´m in training for the long journey back home in a week`s (only a week!) time. Pucón is very pretty, although it`s a bit like a countryside toytown built for tourists (maybe it´s twinned with Cambourne, Debster!). Villarica volcano looks beautiful in the near distance. The ascent looks pretty tough as it´s very snowy at the moment - I´m using my broken elbow as an excuse for not doing it, as it´s what everyone comes here to do. Mum asked me whether I could see it glowing, which I can´t, but I did mention to her that there was a burning car glowing outside my hostel last night. It caused quite a commotion. (Sirens have just gone off, I wonder if that means that the volcano is errupting). The sirens went off last night when the car exploded and I could smell burning, though I didn´t bother to get up to take a look. I was so tired I figured that the other people in the dorm would tell me if the hostel was burning down!
Stayed briefly in Santiago before arriving here. When I got there I wasn´t allowed to check in to the hostel as it was being fumigated (nice). We had to sleep without bedding that night as the sheets were still at the launderette. Still, that and a mix-up with my booking meant that I was given a free night´s stay as compensation. Whilst in Santiago I was approached by an American couple keen to know my nationality. They were very surprised when I told them that I was English. Apparently they thought I looked too "savage" to be English and they´d decided I was German due to my cast "and everything". It´s this "and everything" bit that most worries me. I thought I was just looking my normal self - do I really look that savage?! No answers are required ...
