Carlos & Emma The Great Escape
After a fantastic time in Kanchanaburi we headed north. We ended up in Mae Sot for 1 night where we had the funniest journey from there to Um Phang. We caught a minibus and I use that word loosley, it was an open van with bench like seat facing each other, we were driving for about 10 minutes when we stopped at a motorbike shop, they then proceeded to attach the bike half inside the van and half out!! Crazy, he then sat on the bike, of course the boys had to take it in turns to sit on it as well. After 4 hours we finally reached Um Phang and made firm friends with the other people. In the evening we set off to find a place to watch the England game (the one where we got knocked out) the place was like a ghost town, we walked along the main street and there was nothing so we knocked at this man's house to see if he could help, he went "English, you English? ENGLAND you must watch it here, come come in my house. We explained that we needed beer so he took us to the only bar which had lost the key to the beer fridge!!!! he said he'd sort something out and to his credit he did. The man was a nutter, we'd all be quietly watching the game when he'd scream out "ENGLAND' or 'BECKHAM' and he wouldn't shut up until we joined in.
The next day was the start of our 3 day jungle trip. We started off with rafting for 2 hours down the river then we had a 3 hour jungle trek to the campsite, most of it was up hill and it was the hardest thing I've ever done, poor Carlos got a right ear bashing!!! We reached the campsite and drank Thai whiskey and played cards into the night until the other group (danish) complained that they needed to go to sleep, 9pm, honestly. The next day we walked to the largest waterfall in Thailand, this was pretty amazing. After lunch we set out on another trek for 2 and a half hours, part of the way we had to trek through a river, until we reached the Karen Village where we would all stay. A Karen Village is a village made completely of Bamboo with the roofs of the huts packed with leaves. This was one of the best nights, we all sat around, again drinking Thai Whiskey and playing cards by candle light.
Next day we had a 4 hour elephant ride, we were very glad to see the back of ours, they aren't very comfortable. After this we were taken back to our guest house where a shower was greatly needed, before our 4 hour trip back in our little van minus the bike. Off to Chaing Mia tomorrow so we'll be back soon.
