We did have plans to go up Table Mountain while we were in Cape Town but because of the really strong winds the cable car wasnt working, so we never got the chance to do it. so instead we did the Red route city bus tour on the open topped bus, which took us all over the city to the main sights, we stopped off at the District 6 museum, which was an area of Capetown that was badly affected by the apartheid laws.
we managed to catch the train to Simons Town which is about 40 mins from Capetown, but took over an hour on the train, as they seem to stop every 2 mins to pick people up! the train journey was really beautiful though, really good scenery! we only managed to stop there for lunch before we had to rush back to Capetown to catch the ferry to go over to Robben Island.
The tour around the island was really good, once you got to the island u got put on tour busses to go round the island, we got to see the Lepar colony graveyard, which is what the island was before it became the pison, and there were still several military building on the island from when it was used as a military base. The tour of the prison was given by an ex-prioner, who was a member of the ANC. he was imprisoned at 17 because he was recruitimg people for the militant wing of the party. he was sent to the island for 7 years. He took us to Nelson Mandelas cell, which was cell 5 in section B, this was where all the main opposition leaders were imprisoned.
That was our last day in Cape Town. the next day we caught the bus up to Stellenbosch, where we stayed for the night. we did a wine tour of the reigion, as thats what its famous for! we got told that 2007 has been perfect conditions for the grapes this year, so in a few years time they would be the wines to look out for.
