After several more hours on the road we arrive in Siem Reap at our hotel for the next 2 days. It's one of the nicer ones, with breakfast included, free wifi, air con and a swimming pool. After just a few minutes to freshen up we pile into tuk tuks for what we're told is a 'homestay dinner'. In fact we visit a very poor slum area of Siem Reap and the extent of poverty in Cambodia becomes really clear. Luke in particular found it all very eye-opening.
We visit a local school that has been set up by a charity called New Hope Cambodia. They have also built a medical centre and restaurant through donations, many by Gap Adventures our tour company. We are invited into some lessons in the school and spend a few minutes speaking with the students, who ranged from 16-20 years old. The younger children have been kept away from school as the area is suffering from a Hand Foot and Mouth disease outbreak. 12 children have died in the last week in the area, 2 from this school.
The restaurant run by the charity is where we have dinner and hear lots more about the work of New Hope. I also discuss with the Australian who is running the centre about possibilites of a link with a school in England. Lots of potential there I think.
Dinner was really good, though I didn't try everything. Luke took the lead in eating fried crickets! And to show ultimate manliness after a couple of other people tried one, he had to eat a second to prove a point! Not my cup of tea.
After that we head to 'Pub Street' in the centre of town for a drink.

Pasty Mum Was Luke still making silly comments after eating not one but two crickets (showoff!)? That's a cricket challenge that Jake and Caleb will find hard to beat!! All fine back here. Happy travels!
Monika Chris: I initially was set on gtnietg the three-day pass, but ended up gtnietg just the one-day pass due to budget constraints. One day was enough to go to the main temples, but if you want to see the others outside the Angkor Heritage Park, you really need to get the three-day pass, since they're further out. I'm reserving those for another visit Indiana Vacation Blog: There are much restoration work being done at the temples, hence the scaffoldingDavidd: There are photos of my room in my flickr. It's supposed to get its own entry, but I'll see if I will have the energy to write it later on.Cayce: It does merit a second visit! I haven't tried the baguettes yet, though I'm itching to try them! Today's my free day, so I'm going to spend it walking around town. I'll grab a baguette on the way
