The week went well. My children as usual were fantastic. Our field trip was to Montisatorius which was on Mt Etna. We went on a nice little hike, the coolest part was seeing the tons and tons of lava rock that is everywhere on that part of the mountain. We even saw the fault were the lava came out in I believe 2002 but I could be wrong.
This week was a little different than most because we had to work on Saturday for the 4th of July and then we were able to have Monday off. On Friday night all of the camp A staff attended the festival taking place on base. There was amazing Philippino food and 2 really fun rides. One of them was called Future dance. I have decided that this ride, alone, is the one and only reason to live. Basically you get on and it is just a circle with seats and an open space in the middle. Really loud music plays and then people can stand in the middle and dance. EXCEPT the ride goes way too fast and bumps around in circles for a very long time, we were thinking at least 7 minutes, which all of you from Iowa should know is a VERY long time for a ride to be going. I have many bruises from this ride and the first time I thought I was being possessed by the devil. So of course I did it at least three times. It was scary but a thrill none the less.
On Saturday the camp a staff ran a few stands for the kiddos such as a watermelon eating contest, face painting, and real life angry birds. The kids thought this was great and we were never board. On Saturday evening we had a pretty fun time going on rides again, eating some greasy pizza, and listening to a live band. The fireworks were the perfect way to end the day but a few of us decided to go out after and have a drink which was good because some of the camp a people from Naples decided to come visit for the weekend. It was nice to chat about similarities and differences between sites. The greatest thing about Sig inn that night was the drink I found that is a new favorite for many. It consists of lemon soda and melon vodka (we think). It tastes like candy. I had one and then went home. Jason and I also saw our plane friend (an air force person we met at the airport) that was kind of cool.
Coral, Brittani, and I woke up early Sunday morning for our ITT trip to Siracusa to see the beach and a few other things but the bus never showed which was disappointing and WE BETTER GET OUR MONEY BACK!!! But it turned out to be a blessing because we went to Taormina instead. When found an inexpensive hotel room which had the most breath taking view I had ever seen. Then we shopped the rest of the day. I had a great pizza for lunch and a 4 scoop gelato bowl later plus a small canolie and a giant bottle of water. Then we toured the 2nd largest Greek amphitheatre in Sicily. It was very neat and let’s just say you need to see pictures. That’s really how all of Taormina is, incredible and impossible to describe in words. GO THERE!!! Following the theatre we spent a while looking around a huge garden with all kinds of old structures and some doves and a man playing guitar, beautiful flowers and trees and all kinds of great stuff to see. Also in town I had my picture taken with a statue who was actually a real man. I stood by him and then unexpectedly he put his sword across my neck and it made a really great picture. After this he kissed my hand (I just love these Italians).
As you can imagine we were tired after this so we climbed the millions of stairs back up to our hotel which was actually up higher than Taormina. We had supper on top of the roof, mussels, clams, and spaghetti for me plus pana cetta with orange marmalade for dessert (its kind of like whip cream and pudding at the same time). The view was beautiful and we could see tiny fireworks going off in the distance below us in many locations all over the city HAPPY 4th of JULY to us!
It may be hard to believe but the next day was even better than the last. We had continental breakfast at the hotel. Bread, pastries, cucumbers, tomatoes, coffee, mandarin orange juice, and this made me happy because eating bread for breakfast was on my Italy bucket list…CHECK! We then wandered around for a short time until we FINALLY found the cable car to take us down to the beach. The beach we went to was recommended by our taxi driver Simon and was called Isola Bella or beautiful Island and was it ever beautiful. The water was clearer than crystals, the sun was hot, and the beach was made of rocks, which guess what, is far better than sand. We swam and looked at all kinds of fish and some little crabs and plants and ate a ton! It was a fantastic day of beauty. You must see my pictures!
Ti Voglio bene (I love you in Italiano)
