When we first arrived it was very evident that this place is covered in TRASH…at least along all of the roads. We learned that this is because the government is trying to create a 12 bin recycling plan that has angered the people so they are throwing everything (whole bags of garbage) on the road. The driving is crazy, holy crap there are NO rules. I saw a baby in the front seat of a car on my first drive, YIKES. We live literally 5 doors down from a strip club called Club 69, and yes the “umbrella girls” stand outside, but we have been told they will not hustle us. The worst part so far is that our housing (which is truly beautiful and wonderful) has no internet
Now the good, the flights were all on time and I was able to sleep for about 4 hours on the international one. Every ones baggage arrived on with our flights which was also quite nice. Our points of contact are very nice and so are the people that I will be working with. We had orientation all day today and got our Military i.d.s (this allows us to get on and off) and had tours of the base along with a bunch of other informative sessions.
The really good stuff…I have pretty much been living off of pizza margarita! We have been told about these wonderful events called Agrigento’s I plan to go to one on June 19th! They are a wonderful feast full of all local cheeses, olives, meats, wines, and on and on. This will be amazing. The other trip that interests me is a one night sailing trip along the coast with wine tastings and stops at local beaches…YAY!!!! This weekend we will either go on a family (camp a staff) trip to Mt. Etna (the currently erupting volcano which can be seen from everywhere and is the scene of my back yard). We will also be visiting Roma at some point (hopefully).
Besides the above I have just been working, and will continue to do so, this is going to be a busy planning work for camp a stuff.
On Thursday I will be going into Catania, the nearest city. We will get to possibly take a cooking class and see the world class fish and flea markets. More info on this will come later.
All my love from far far away!
P.S. these pictures are not mine and I have to put one up from my blog site until I have time to take my own
