Work has been long and exhausting but very rewarding and good! I am enjoying it very much and LOVE the kids they are so fun and mature. We had our first field trip this week it was very interesting. We went tubing as the first part of our journey. What is tubing in Sicily you might ask? Well, it’s much different than you might think. An Italian man literally greased the bottom of the inner tube, sat a child down in it, and sent them down a hill on a track basically on top of some sort of green textured tarp. It was very exciting and I was able to try it. It went really fast. The best part was that there was a conveyer belt to stand on in order to ride back up. We were also able to see a very fascinating butterfly garden that had hundreds of different types of butterflies inside. I took a few cool pictures and am planning a room in my future house based on the colors in the pictures…
This weekend we were lucky enough to take an ITT trip to Palermo, one of the bigger cities in Sicily. The trip started off very early in the A.M. so when we stopped at the gas station I was ready for my first Italian Cappuccino. I was the next person in line to order my drink when all of the sudden I was stunned to silence as I realized that the Italian man in front of me had put his hand on my body and decided to squeeze me. I guess this was my first Italian grope…ewwww. I was so embarrassed that I did not have time to react and ended up having the man trying to take my order have to ask me a few times before I came back to the real world and understood what had just happened. By the way my cappuccino was just as I had imagined it and gave me the much needed energy that I was looking for.
Seeing the ocean and the scenery as we drove into Palermo was Beautiful! There are tons of hills and small to medium sized mountains that we saw on our 2.5 hour drive. The first place we visited was the Montreale Cathedral. It was stunning, the art work was fantastic and I saw many interesting things. I was even able to see the beginning of a Wedding and I was able to get some pictures. I have plenty of pictures to show everyone when I get home. Next we visited another church but you were not able to go inside. The architecture on the outside was amazing though and the statues are always neat. I finally saw some real persists at this one and was excited to take a picture. Following the churches we went for lunch. A few people in the group I was with ate at a nice place that had a hidden 12 dollar sitting fee AWESOME in the most sarcastic of ways. But Michelle and I’s basil pesto, buffalo (smoked) mozzarella, and cabage-ish pizza was fantastic’o. After the pizza we tried to find the Opera house nearby but had little time so we settled for some Gelato. I was in a hurry so I have no idea what kind I got but it was delicious and chocolaty.
The final portion of our tour was the catacombs. I knew what this was and was excited. What I did not realize was how it would affect me once inside. Basically there are rows and rows of dead people whose skeletons are hanging on the wall. The one we saw today is suppose to be one of the biggest. They described it as how the Sicilian people would memorialize those they loved, going to visit often long ago just as we might a grave site. What really got to me were the babies and also those young women who were never old enough to marry. They were hung up in wedding dresses to be married to God. The creepiest of all though was little miss Rosalia. The man who put her in catacomb discovered a new way to go about this Leaving looking just as if she a real live sleeping child. Her hair is still perfectly brown. It was sad and strange but an adventure just the same! All in all it has been a memorable weekend and Sunday is still unknown. Next weekend is the 4th of July and I believe the base has some sort of festival so that should be fun and interesting.
