Well, good things can't last forever, they say... Our perfect chalet over the water became not so perfect with the arrival of a Singaporean family of 7 moving into the room next to us which shares our balcony... Bringing along what looks like the entire contents of their house (including the kitchen sink.. literally) in boxes along with their 3 screaming children, our bliss became short lived!!! At first we dramatically declared that this was impossible to put up with, but after a moment of composure, we decided we would just have to deal with it and despite the noise, the chalet is still beautiful with fantastic views over the water to the sunset and it would be a pity to forgo this just because we can't put up with the noise of a few small children. So we are staying put...
After getting over it, we decided a walk would do the trick and so decided to go to Tekek. The path did not look like it was used that often and was very difficult to follow in places. A few strategically placed plastic bottles and bags tied to trees assured us we were on the right track. Following the Telekom line (phone line) seemed to be the most logical way through the jungle. The first part over the hill was very steep up then came down the other side and onto the first bay Monkey Bay. After a short swim (we were dripping in sweat, nothing like 90% humidity!!), Emily decided it would be fun to hop along the rock around the next headland. Although fun, it probably wasn't the right decision given that we almost go stuck, thank god for the non-slip sandals! The next bay was Monkey Beach and after another swim, we continued through the jungle, onto Air Batang (ABC) beach. Once at this beach there was a concrete path leading to Tekek, the main town where the airport is. After looking around, we found the place where the duty-free beer was sold! 2RM per beer (about 70c AUD) so we stocked up!! By this stage it was 5pm and we were totally exhausted (the walk was about 10km), so we tried to find someone to take us back by boat (The usual way of getting around the island - but a total rip off 25RM per person one way). As it was so late in the day we had to pay extra, but we were glad to get back to our chalet and have a shower before having dinner. A few (duty free) beers on the balcony before bed put us in a better mood to deal with the screaming children!
