WE'RE ALIVE!! Em squared are happy to announce that we escaped the Bangkok floods by the skin of our teeth. Our hostel was two minutes away from the ever rising river, and things got a bit scary when the hostel owners began building a small wall at the entrance to keep the water out! This was all very well, but when we heard crocodiles were now roaming the streets, we questioned the extent to which a two foot wall would really protect us.
All in all, we really enjoyed our time in the capital, and getting scammed three times in three days isn't too bad… is it?! One highlight had to be our evening of sipping cocktails (non-alcoholic for Gilb, obvs) on the roof of Bangkok's tallest skyscraper (see picture). A fun evening was had by all, especially the 60 year old man on a date with two Thai sisters who looked about 18 on the table next to us… playerrrr!
We're now in Phuket, and to be quite honest, we hate it. We know we've been harping on about living here for the past year, but this island really should be called 'The land of McDonald's, neon and speedos'.We might as well be in Malia - one bar owner's main selling point was that in his 'English only bar' there would be, we quote, "no local Thais to annoy you"…. Hmmm. The beach here is pretty fit, but only if you look straight forward and ignore all the tack around. But hey, we can't really complain what with all this 32 degree heat and the clear blue sea
In other news, Billsy's fear of being mistaken for a lady-boy came true when she was referred to as 'sir' on more than one occasion, and Gilly is struggling with nightmares after overhearing a vivid re-telling of a 'ping pong show' while trying to eat breakfast (DISCLAIMER: DO NOT GOOGLE PING PONG SHOWS - WE HOLD NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OF INNOCENCE.) Contrary to our core values (looking reem, smelling reem, being reem) we look like absolute states.Although the fact that one man felt the need to do 20 press-ups in front of us on the beach suggests that we're globally fit even without makeup (jokes!)
Anyway, back to our plans… To cut a long and stressful story short, we've decided to put teaching English on hold (Thai children will have to wait a while longer before they can acquire Hull and Scouse accents…) Our plan is to travel around the southern islands off the Andaman coast, starting with Ko Phi Phi this Saturday and ending in Malaysia where we can renew our visas. Then it's back to Phuket to spend Christmas on the beach with our fellow Billingtons and Gilberts (BG Christmas here we come!) We could tell you what we're planning on doing in January, but there's no point, as let's face it, our plans are probably going to change again J We're still having a great time and are excited united for the weeks ahead. Internet access might be a bit temperamental from now on, but we promise to keep in touch whenever we can! Peace out, stay reem.
