Greetings!
Well, after thinking Patong was as bad as Phuket got, we made the mistake of hitting Phuket Town on the east coast... although maybe our choice of hostel played a part in our ever growing dislike for the island. We arrived at O'Malley's (yes, we ashamedly booked in to an IRISH BAR) only to be greeted (in some form) by a drunk manager who had no idea if he had a room for us. Our room was basic to say the least; bunkbeds with rocks for mattresses and a boarded up window is not our idea of fun. It was the first night we had felt the need to whack out our mosquito nets... it was a battle to put them up... the mosquito nets won.
After deciding to stay only one night instead of the planned two, we made an all too quick exit the next morning. Literally, too quick. We were shoved on to the back of motorbikes, and before we knew what was happening, we were cruising down the crazy Thai roads with all our possessions on our backs! Unsure of the social etiquette for motorbike riding, Billsy clung on for dear life (headbutting her driver every time they went over a bump) and despite Gilly's efforts to make as little contact as possible, she still ended up stinking of his sweat... yum!
The boat to Phi Phi was a pleasant one - we opted to soak up some rays on the deck with our feet hanging over the edge of the boat :) After a truly HORRENDOUS 30 minute trek with our backpacks, we arrived at our wooden bungalow, situated up in the forest overlooking a reservoir. We loved our time in our secluded paradise (yes, we found a beach all to ourselves!) apart from one scary incident involving a drunken fight (NOT us!), smashed windows, sunburnt ass cheeks and Billsy's 78 mosquito bites - ouch. We spent most of our time 'bronzing' ourselves (we use the term bronzing loosely - we're still pretty pale) but spent one day on a snorkelling adventure in the Andaman sea, where we saw monkeys, swam with sharks (not that we saw any...), visited 'The Beach' and nearly died due to incredibly rough seas and an untrustworthy longboat. For the first time since we set off, Julie Andrews came to our rescue as we sang, oh too loudly, 'these are a few of our faaavourite things!" while trying not to cry.
Despite having food poisoning from eating street food, we soldiered on and made our way to Krabi. We LOVE it here! What's more, we haven't been involved in too many concerning or dangerous situations since our arrival! Well, apart from Gilly losing her beach towel to an electric wire, Billsy nearly collapsing while en route to a Buddhist temple some 1,237 steps up and a couple more water related near death incidents... oh and we also found ourselves in the middle of a thunder and lightning storm while stranded on a floating wooden fish farm! In one amazing day, we rode an elephant named Nelson through a jungle, swam in a crystal clear lagoon and relaxed in natural hot (too hot if anything) springs, not to mention partying the night away in a local reggae bar. It was here that Billsy discovered robot dancing can indeed be applied to reggae music... win.
Tomorrow we're leaving the mainland and heading off to Koh Lanta to once again embrace the beach life! Our other plans haven't really changed - apart from the fact that we've decided to jolly on down to Singapore after Malaysia in December... why the devil not eh? We can't believe we've almost been gone a month! Hope all's well at home. Peace out, stay reem.
