This week for Play Critique we had to go see a play on our own, so Monday Jill, Melissa and I went to see Avenue Q. It was hysterical and I highly recommend it to everyone. If you do know anything about it, it is a comedic musical based on the life after Muppets or Seasme Street. Neither wanted their names officially with Ave. Q, but you can tell that's what they were going for.
Wednesday night had some unexpected interesting events. Marketing got out early so I went with Jordan and Jill to Angel (a restaurant/pub down the street from class). About two minutes after we walked in a guy walked and sputtered out how the world would be a better place if we all just loved each other. We were all just like uh, okay and turned back to talk amongst ourselves. The man did not get the hint. He asked us if we were from Canada (everyone thinks were from Canada for some crazy reason), and we bluntly explained were from the US. Before we knew it he was sharing that his name was Gene and how he loved Michael Moore. He asked our opinion, and trying to avoid conversation I told him I did not know his work well enough to form and opinion and we politely informed him that we just wanted to relax and have a drink and not talk about this. He continued about Michael Moore for awhile and we continued to not listen.
After awhile he started getting really loud and the bartender came over to tell him to stop yelling. We then re-explained to the drunkard that we just wanted to have a drink and asked if he would leave us alone to talk amongst ourselves. Apparently he didn't like those comments because he started yelling at us about:-the amount of unemployed people in the UK-about parents being blown up -if we thought it was right about parents killing their fathers and vice versa-and pretty much why we sucked. We got up to leave as the bartender was coming to kick him out. We took our drinks outside. He got kicked out and as soon as he outside we snuck back in. Literally 45 seconds later 6 cops came up to look for the guy, but as soon as he saw the lights he was gone. It was really kind of funny.
The next night was Valentine's Day. We went to see a very romantic play for class, Helter Skelter/Land of the Dead. A bar called Walkabout was right next door so went there afterwards. It was an interesting experience. Everyone there was Australian. One guy in particular walked up to our table and asked us for our phone number. I don't even think he said 'hi' or 'how are you'. I don't think he appreciated it when I told him I would only give him my phone number if I could cut off his rat tail (which was hanging about 3 inches down his neck-gross). He left us along shortly after. That night was also karaoke night. We stayed there as long as we could stand it before heading to Notting Hill.
Melissa looked up a place in Notting Hill called Trailler Happiness, which had great reviews. However, by the time we made it there it was closed. We ended up going to Covent Garden to go meet a group. We went to Los Locos and met up with everyone and danced and hung out their all night. When we got back we went back and John made us a 3am feast.
We were in their flat and I decided it would be a good idea to lay across two chairs. I was cold, so I made somebody to give me a coat to use as a blanket. About 30 seconds later I was out cold. I must have been really tired because they messed with me and I didn't even budge. The cleaning lady comes every Friday morning so they set up a scene and hoped she would find me in the morning. They strategically placed empty liquor bottles, cough medicine and other random things all around me! Luckily, I woke up at 6am and transferred to my own bed (before the cleaning lady arrived). However, they made sure to take plenty of pictures.
Friday I went to try and sneak a peek at London Fashion week. All the tents were set up outside the National History Museum which is not far from us. I really couldn't see anything, but there was one door left open and I was able to see some models doing a practice walk. They weren't all done up yet, so I couldn't tell what designer it was.
Melissa's friends were in so we wanted to make sure we showed them a good time. We went to Mahiki (there often celebrity sightings there). Mahiki is an overly tacky Hawaiian bar that makes drinks that are 99% sugar. The clientele was different, lots of men who look like that came from work and women who were trying to hard. It was still a lot of fun though. We spotted some bodyguards hiding a corner table, but we couldn't see who it was. Either way there were no mentions of celebrities in their on Friday. However, Sarah Harding - and English singer and model - was their on Saturday. Talk about bad timing. It was still fun. Everyone was tired and left early but Jill and I stayed to dance before finally calling it a night and taking the night bus home.
I had to get up early on Saturday because I was going on a trip through the program. We took a coach bus to Stonehenge and Bath. Stonehenge was first. A lil' background knowledge incase you didn't know - Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. Archaeologists believe that the standing stones were erected around 2200 BC and the surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. The entry fee pays for tickets through the gate along with a sweet audio tour. No one knows exactly who built Stonehenge but according to the audio tour some believe it was either the Devil or Merlin and his dragons. My vote is for Merlin.
Next we went over to Bath. Our first stop there was the Roman Bath houses. More background - The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The complex is a very well-preserved Roman site of public bathing. The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level and has four main features, the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the Museum holding finds from Roman Bath. The buildings above street level date from the 19th century.Again we got another fun audio tour. After the Roman Baths we grabbed lunch. By the time we were finished we were short on time so did not get to much sightseeing. We headed back to London.
Everyone was too exhausted from the trip to make it out that evening so we stayed around the flat. We hung out their all night and watched the IU game when it came out at 2am. Apparently I am sleep deprived because I passed out around halftime. This time they literally screamed at the top of their lungs at me, and nothing. I didn't budge. I woke up around 6am again and transferred to my own bed.
The next day Jill and I needed to go grocery shopping so I went to the Mecca of all Whole Foods. It was about 4 floors! We had lunch there first; it was the freshest meal I've had yet. Then we did some grocery shopping. Our short trip for lunch and groceries turned into a four hour adventure.
