This week we saw out first play for class, Cabaret. We all came right from work so met up for dinner at Humus Bros. We are all obsessed with humus so this was an exciting adventure for us. Then we went see Cabaret. I thought it was really good. Apparently Jill didn't feel the same because during the second act I turned to whisper something to her and she was passed out cold. Oh Jill.
It was a typical week of work and class. Thursday we saw another play for class, Metamorphosis. It was quite unlike any play I have ever seen before. The stage was two floors. The bottom was set up as a dining room. The top floor was the main characters bedroom, but it was set up so it looked as if you were peering into the room from above (the bed, table, lamps were hung so they were sticking against the wall). The main actor transformed into a beetle (or went nuts-it's up for interpretation). In order to show this he was jumping all over his room. There were footholds and handgrips all over his bedroom that he was jumping to and holding onto. This guy was ridiculously talented. The play itself was sort of bizarre. Apparently if you know anything about theatre it is supposed to be amazing, but I don't and my first impression is that it was strange. I went with from people to class to a pub in the area afterwards, but called it an early night because I was leaving for Spain the next day and had lots to do.
Most of the people I know signed up for a trip to Scotland this weekend. Jill and I didn't so we figured this was the perfect opportunity to go visit Zak in Seville. Apparently we have good timing because it was also Carnival this weekend. Ryan Air doesn't offer you many options, so we took a Friday night flight. Getting on the airplane is similar to herding sheep. They announce that you can board and everyone jumps up and tries to be first to squeeze through he tiny entrance gate. We got to the Seville airport and had written down what we thought was our hostel's address. We showed the cab driver (who spoke no English). Apparently it was cross streets, so he dropped us in some alley and we had to wander around and look for our hostel. While wandering we ran into Zak who was coming to meet us.We found our hostel, put down our bags and started the night festivities.
Zak took us to a tiny whole in the wall bar first. It could have fit no more than 20 people. I was talking to Jill and Zak and there backs were facing the door. All of a sudden my jaw dropped and who walks in but our friend Sam. I had no idea he was studying abroad, let alone in Spain. He was the last person in the world I expected to see. It was quite the humorous reunion. After our mini-gathering we parted ways and Zak took us a discoteca.
Seeing as all the guys were more interested in dancing with each other than us - Jill, Zak and I danced together (for about 3 hours). We called it a night around 4.30am, and took a cab back to the hostel and passed out.
The next morning we met up with Zak to walk around and Seville and grab some lunch. We went to El Catedral and from there wandered around. Zak hasn't really done any of the touristy things yet, so he took us on one of his tours, to see the shops. Before this we did enjoy a nice lunch outdoors. The weather was gorgeous. I was in jeans and a sweater and I was hot, while all the crazy Spaniards were walking around in winter coats. Over reactors. The shops were a necessary stop as he had to get our costumes in order. We bought a few random things, but for the most part the shops were wiped out. We went back to the hostel to try and take a power nap before the night began.
The nearest celebration was in Cadiz which was 1 ½ hour bus ride. It is supposed to be a celebration with Lent but it was more like 100,000 Spaniards having a street party/rave/hardcore Halloween party on steroids. Everyone was decked out in hardcore costumes. And let me tell you, Spanish men LOVE to dress up as women! I swear between 25 and 50 percent of the men were dressed as women. We didn't dress up in particular costumes because we didn't realize how hardcore people were about this. We made due though. The bus dropped us off at midnight and didn't pick us until 7.45am. We pretty much just roamed the streets and drank with strangers. Again we couldn't actually converse so it was a lot of drunk people talking to us and me and Jill going "no hablo espanol."
We got back to Seville at 9ish, showered, napped and had to be out of our hostel by 11.30am. On Sunday Jill and I wandered Seville and let Zak sleep all day. We strolled around by ourselves and enjoyed a nice long lunch outdoors. We met up with Zak for dinner before we left and took a late flight home. Seville was so pretty and such a relaxing place.I definitely want to go back to Spain.
