Kelowna (Aka Grizzly bear)
Out of the four places I've visited in Canada so far, this is my favourite (except for the lack of snow!) It's a very cute town full of colourful houses with white porches, similar looking to the one in UP! that travels by balloons! And to top it off, I had my first four hours without any form of precipitation in the two weeks that I have been in Canada :-) Although I did get soaked on the walk back to the hostel this evening.
I started off walking down Abbott Street which is known as the heritage district. All along the road are little red blocks with old photos of Kelowna in the early 1900's. The road follows the Okanagan lake with views of the surrounding mountains. Very pretty :-)
I then went to a little coffee and chocolate shop for lunch and had the tastiest chunky mushroom soup ever :-) Mmmm... The woman who owns it makes lots of delicious looking little truffles. I was very tempted but managed to resist and carried on my walk to the heritage museum where I hoped to get an idea of what Kelowna would have been like in the days my Grandad grew up here. There wasn't a huge amount there but interesting enough. Unsurprisingly my family name did not turn up anywhere!!
After my little wander round the museum I thought I would visit the wine museum. I got there to find out it was under work (the busy summer season is over so everywhere is closing for the winter) so instead it was just a wine shop with a few bits of information around. I got handed a glass of Gewurztraminer (my favourite!!) :-) and learnt about iced wine which I had never heard of before. I even got to taste some of the iced wine... very sweet :-) I'll be sure to bring some back.
I am now back in the hostel and my room mate is still in bed ill (She's been there since I arrived at 7pm yesterday) and hockey is still on the TV in the living room... Ah well... I'll get on with some job applications instead. Early start tomorrow to head to SilverStar in search of job and flat! Wish me luck!
