On Sunday morning, we left the hotel in Johannesburg at 8:00am and arrived at the Shiduli Game Lodge at the Karongwe Game Reserve in Tzaneen. We arrived around 3:00pm, dropped our bags in our room, then headed out on our very first African "game drive." There are 19 people in our tour group—8 called the Victoria Falls people (which includes us) and 11 others. Two of the "other" group ride with us during the game drives—they are really nice funny sisters. The ages of the people on our tour are from 27 to 82 years old. There are 4 ladies in their 60's, several in their 30's, 40's, and 50's with about half being couples. On our game drives, we've seen lions, cheetahs, elephants, antelope, zebra, buffalo, hipos, and even a python. Seeing the male lion was super cool! It was a totally unreal experience! His mane was so beautiful, it looked like a wig! I have to admit that when he turned and walked towards us, I felt a rush of adrenaline and a slight bit of fear. On the property here, around our rooms, little monkeys hang out. I went back to my room to get something and left the door open for about 30 seconds. When I turned around, a monkey was peeking in the room from the doorway! Tonight we had a BBQ dinner and tired crocodile. It tastes like beef ribs. Which is great if you like beef ribs! Mom liked it!
Tomorrow morning we head out again for another lodge. We've been pretty busy and WiFi is sketchy at the lodge—we need a sign-on name and passcode which constantly is expiring and the connection is only available in the lounge which is 5 minutes away from our room. The property gets very dark at night so we are happy to have our flashlights to walk to our room. At night and in the morning the temperature is pretty cold. This morning's game drive was very cold. During the day, it's been sunny and in the low 70's I think. In Zimbabwe, where Victoria Falls is, the temperature was much warmer which the mosquitos seemed to like. I was bitten three times by mosquitos in Zimbabwe but so far so good here!
