After an enjoyable evening in Nogales, everybody slept well in our huge rooms at the Holiday Inn in Nogales. Most were up by 7:00 for breakfast in the hotel. Then some went for fuel and others stocked up on food and Mexican pesos.Pepe and Memo met us all at the hotel at 8:30.It was great to see them again. We are very optimistic about our border crossing. It was only 2 C this morning
Then we were off to the border.First the American border. We gave them our documentation and they didn't seem too interested or concerned and we were through very quickly.Arrived at the Mexican border and Pepe, Allan and Pepes collegues went in the customs office to start the process. We finished that process after about 1.5 hours and then we were on to step 2- getting the trucks x-rayed and then step 3- park in the lot and wait for our clearance. The crew kept busy by shining, waxing and cleaning trucks, playing cards, listening to music, sleeping and snacking.
There was a Rotary group from Boise Idaho with two buses for Mexico. They didn't seem to have the same organization as our group and were going to be delayed at the border for some time.
Anyway we got out of the parking lot (step 3), and then into another station (step 4) where they checked the serial numbers again and did more documents; but we were out within 25 minutes. We had a lottery running among the crew for guessing our departure time from step 4 and Murray won the pot (for the second year in a row) at 3:10.Then down the road to the passport and visa place (step 5), where we all received our tourist visas. And then it was the last Customs people at step 7, where they searched three vehicles and checked serial numbers once again. So by 4:00 we were well on our way to our evening destination of Hermosilo.
We had an uneventful drive through the Mexican landscape of desert making way for green cultivated lands.Everybody was reacquainted with the topas sign- meaning speed bumps which vary from 6 inches to 2 feet in height. It was hard driving through all the towns where the restaurants have their bbq's going- great smells.
We arrived at the hotel at 7:45 and then went for supper at a great steak house. We had fantastic steaks and all the trimmings. It was Lens birthday. We had the band play some music for the folks. Then a quick trip back to the hotel for a short refreshment to get ready for tomorrows adventure to Mazatlan.
