From Bondi we rattled off in our 'lil camper towards Gosford, a quiet little town on the coast. Not a campsite anywhere! so we tried to disguise ourselves as a boat and hid in the Marina carpark, it was a lovely spot and we had dinner overlooking the water.
Next morning we took a trip to the local Reptile Park, with an eclectic collection of weird Australian creatures: Crocs, Gaters, Wombats, Tazmainian Devil, Platypus, Dingos, Lizards and snakes, Spiders, Kangaroos and of course, everyones favourite... the Koala which we got to pet. He was soo cute!
By the time we left the Reptile park the sun was high in the sky and the temperature had reached a scorching 35C! Thank God for Air Con!!!!
We drove to stockport passing The Entrance (thats is actually the name of the place... 'The Entrace'... dont ask!) where we saw masses of Pelicans on the shore. They are amazingly strange looking birds, firstly the size of their beak, secondly their size in general, they are massive! Somehow they manage to take off with a supprising amount of grace. they seem to like to pearch on top of the street lamps, which looks totally bizzare!
After decorating our faces with an ice cream, we drove on to Stockport, passing through Newcastle. Stockport was nothing but a campsite. We made friends with some fellow campervanners and drank beer and wine all night. After several bottles, the pain of the Mosquito bites seems to lessen... more beer please!
Waking up a little blurry-eyed, we drove back through Newcastle for a better look around, nice place but just another medium sized town with pretty beaches, so we decided to be brave and head inland!
First stop was Gunnadeh - "Koala Capital of Australia", found a campsite with a nice cold pool, and chilled out for the evening, taking frequent dips in the pool to stop our flesh from cooking in the heat!!
Next morning (after a swim of course) we went for an hour and a half walk in the blistering heat to try to find some wild Koala's.... we didn't see ONE. Koala capital my arse! We did, however, see two dead lizards and a lot of ants and flies. It was a good walk though with only a sprinkling of signposts, so much of the navigation was on which path looked less likely to have snakes! The ground was parched with very little vegitation except for the hardy Gum trees that somehow survived in the heat.
We drove another 300K's inland to Goodiwindi. The road there was amazing, just how you'd imagine Australian rural roads to be... dead straight for miles and miles, flat land either side of the road for as far as the eye could see, disapearing into a hazy blur. The only traffic being huge trucks with the most outragous loads balanced on the back. We saw loads of Kangaroos by the road... unfortuantely they wont be boucing anymore... the truckers seem to use them as target practice!
We're planning on heading back towards the coast today for a much needed sea breeze.
