Eaton Family's Aussie Adventure
After Cape Tribulation we camped at Innot Hot Springs and spread our stuff all over the place to try and dry it out and we also had lovely swims in their hot pools - it is really nice. From there we went to Undara Lava Tubes which are really interesting. This area has had 165 lava episodes of which the Undara episode is the biggest and most significant lasting for 15 years about 190,000 years ago. Lava apparently cools at 1000 degrees and forms a crust allowing the hot lava to continue flowing beneath and this is what happened here. The tubes are enormous and yet vulcanologists think that only 1/4 are open, the rest are filled. Where the roof of the tubes has fallen in there is a totally different vegetation - something called eucalptus vine thicket which is what was predominant 190,000 years ago. It was all quite fascinating. We also did a walk around the crater of a nearby volcano - not the Undara one, which is mysteriously protected and off limits to all. We all learnt a lot about volcanoes.
