Eaton Family's Aussie Adventure
Both Hughenden and Richmond have dinosaur and fossil sites and whilst Hughenden is the bigger town - it is a bit sad and derelict with boarded up shops and a pub that is closed and smashed windows. The dinosaur centre was small but had a good kids section but there was nothing to recommend the town in our opinion. Richmond however was completely the opposite. The local chamber of commerce was very active and had put in a huge man made lake, stocked it with fish and it is big enough to water ski in etc. It is right in town and the caravan park was on its edges. The town also has the world class fossil centre called Kronosaurus Korner, which is named for the giant marine reptile Kronsaurus Queenslandicus (I kid you not!) and it is the size shown in the photo - about 13 metres. It was the biggest predator of its type and was at the time of dinosaurs but marine reptiles are categorised differently. This whole area was a sea and is therefore very rich in fossils. It was very interesting, but I think Rich is now fossiled out!
