Everything is going famously. I think I'm getting the hang of everything and I've met a bunch of people. Most of them are American, but at this point I'm not picky. A group of us hung out on Friday, and I'm more than a little envious of the location of everyone else's suites. I thought Newington was pretty close to everything, but compared to everyone else I'm in the middle of nowhere. Two of my friends live right above the grocery store that I have to walk seven blocks to. Oh well, no one else has a private garden and my room is bigger than theirs. Anyway, on Friday we ended up at a pub and it was hilarious. We were ready for real Scottish nightlife, but the cover band loved Johnny Cash and songs like Sweet Home Alabama. It's really funny to hear people with thick Scottish accents sing Sweet Home Alabama.
The next day we went to Loch Lomond, and it was freezing and foggy. I thought I was going to lose my toes. But the loch was really pretty and had tons of swans on it, and a whole fleet of half-submerged boats covered in sea life. That was strange. There was a castle on a hill overlooking the loch that we hiked up to, and then we gave up on being outdoors and went to a restaurant. Sticky toffee pudding is amazing! See my photo album for pictures of Loch Lomond.
Nothing in Edinburgh is open late. So annoying. We wanted some dessert on Saturday but everyone stopped serving food at 10! My friend from New York was baffled.
However, Edinburgh is really safe to walk through no matter the time. And it is amazing to look up from Princes Street and see the castle all lit up.
Buses will splash you
Glasgow is really ugly
Peanut butter is not widely used
KFCs are still allowed to call their 'chicken' chicken
No one honks, they just run you down
All the cars are really new. I haven't seen any battered or rusty ones anywhere.
2p coins are really big and annoying
I might be going to Dublin for St. Patrick's Day! How touristy is that?
Okay, I'm procrastinating. I have my first tutorial tomorrow morning and I really don't want to do my reading. The break has made me lazy. Bah.
