Queenstown, New Zealand. Small Town with HUGE Ideas.
Queenstown is a sensational town. Sure its small, measuring only 1.5 sq Km in area, but there is not, and never will be, a shortage of things to do. From the skiing season in winter to the endless summer 'adrenaline' activities to the bars, restaurants, hotels and stunning homes.
It all starts with the flight into Queenstown Airport. The approach is through a valley with sheer rockface either side. Stunning scenery, if a little nerve wracking, with a bit of turbulance. After a short journey into town you immediately appreciate how small but picturesque it is in the summer.
Everything in Queenstown is geared toward enjoying yourself, everything. Every possible adventure activity is catered for.
After a day of exploring the sights and soaking up the atmosphere we took a bus trip to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Milford Sound. Four hours by bus gets you to Milford from Queenstown. At Milford you take a boat out into the Sound. For an idea of what the Milford Sound should look like Google is your friend. Its what we'll be doing as its was CHUCKING it down the whole time we were there, seriously. The rain did have its advantages as the rivers and waterfalls were an incredible sight.
With the sight seeing out the way, and the sun returned to the sky, a day of activites was on the cards. First up a NZ must, no trip here would be complete with a Bungy off the Karawau Bridge, soaking in the water below on the way down. What a buzz.
From there Diane and I travelled 20km by road upstream alongside the mighty Karawau River took us to the start of 5km of River Surfing. River surfing is basically gliding through the river rapids hanging on to what is effectivelely a boogie board. From the ice cold river the view back up the canyon is simply breathtaking, then the rapids throw you under again.
Queenstown ends for us in the morning when we head to Auckland but we hope to return, Soon!
